Bragging Time!: How Many Ratings Do You Have?

Mon Jan 30, 2006 8:24 am

I wanted to see who here has/had the most ratings. Count all the ones you ever had, ASEL,AMEL, CFI,ATP etc. and for what aircraft (balloons and gliders and blimps and all that other stuff counts too) Also include endorsements (complex, high performance etc). Include the ones you went through (ie, list everything you did from your PPL to your CFI)

I started with the PPL, currently have my PPL-AMEL with complex endorsement for twins.

Yes I know, I suck  blush

So, you think you can beat that? Big grin

I bet Mr. SlamClick has a lot to brag about...  listen

Good question. I can't imagine ever maintaning proficiency at any more than 4, or...I don't know...maybe 5 at a time.

It's all there in the FAA airman database, though.

The question was not currency, it was how many. The type ratings don't drop when you add a new one. They just keep stacking.

All I have is a PPl-SEL. I did, however, receive a high-performance endorsement from my girlfriend the other night. I'm afraid it was fake though.

Canadian Commercial Pilot License (Aeroplane)

And a direct quote from the license:

"All Single Pilot Non-High Performance, Single and Multi-Engine Land Aeroplanes, Group 1 Instrument Rating To 2006/08/01 Currency Provisions"

Also, I have a Glider Pilot License, which is a seperate document. Regrettably, I no longer meet the currency requirements for this.

I competed for Western Michigan University for four years, and had a blast. I've never judged Riddle...only regionals so far...but am looking forward to judging a nationals competition in the future.

2H4, just like Clay Lacy (VNY) who flies just about anything. It'd be hard to keep them all apart though.

Moi:

FAA CPL/ME/IR
JAA ATPL/E120/B757/B767/B737

In Europe (JAA) though, non-current type ratings will completely disappear from your licence after a few years, which is a real pity.

I've done my CPL flight test, but still need a few more hours till I get the license. Just finished my Multi rating, and I am starting on my Multi IFR.

I am not trying to flame anyone or question someones integrity here. You CANNOT hold a type rating in any helicopter. They are all the same no matter what engine, class, or type. So how do you hold a type rating in MD500, R22 and R44? I know this because I am rated in helicopters.

Finally, i can understand that some choose to hold as many ratings as they can for braggin rights. Usually these pilots are in excess of 40 years old however, I do question your ability to have recieved training and qualification in as many airframes as you have. Some of those airframes require WEEKS of schooling to become qualified as a SIC, much less a PIC.

I am by no means an authority on the process, but I do know that with a complex piece of equipment such as a helicopter, you just do not hop around from airframe to airfram without WEEKS of training. Hence why even a 35 year old would be very hard pressed to holding that many aircraft quals.

Please Help Me Understand.

GOT a little lost on this. I thought 2H4 was saying this was his certificate. I think i misread here. If this is SLAMCLICK, then i TRUELY can see where he can hold that many.. You never lose what you lean how to fly. You can go UNCURRENT, but still hold the rating or aircraft qualification. You just need to take a check ride for proficiency then you are current in that airframe.

Apologies to the stabbing remark toward 2H4, I misread the posts.

Hey, no sweat, Longbow. I should have made it clear that I'm most certainly NOT Mr. Briggs...sorry for not specifying. I have trouble imagining how someone could hold that many types even at age 60 or 70!

Quoting LongbowPilot (Reply 33):

That's interesting. I always thought that if it was powered by a jet engine, it automatically required a type....regardless of category. Might that guy's rotary-wing "types" actually be some kind of seperate PIC qualification?

Well I am qualified in a Twin Turbine Engine aircraft. I have been told that it isn't the number of engines in Rotary, unlike the fixed wing cousin. It is the amount of transmissions that means more. So in other words the only aircraft that should require a type rating right now is the Chinook since it has 3 transmissions...

That is how it was explained to me, it is up for debate if someone else knows.

From a Barry Schiff article in the May 2001 AOPA Pilot:

"Although no one has all the ratings, FedEx DC–10 Capt. Robert Briggs apparently has the most. He has every category and class rating (without any limitations) except for "powered lift" aircraft, but this is only because no such aircraft has yet been certified. He also has 75 type ratings, the most recent of which was added to his certificate in March, for a turboprop-powered DC–3 (DC-3TP).

According to a response he received from the FAA Airman Certification Branch in Oklahoma City, the next-closest pilot has 70 type ratings. It makes my 11 seem insignificant.
