High By-pass Engine Useing The Jt-8 Core

Fri Mar 24, 2006 7:08 am

Seeing that the CFM-56 high by-pass engines was built using the low by-pass F-101 engines core. I was wondering could P&W had build a high by-pass engine base on the jt-8 core if they had partner up with some other company to build the fan and new trust reverser.

PW has two high bypass engines in the aircraft class that the JT8 powers, the PW6000 and the IAE V2500.

What would be the value of a new engine based on an old core technology?

I believe he was asking if P&W could have done it way back in the 1970's, when the first CFM-56s started rolling off the line.

It is indeed an interesting question that maybe our guru Lightsaber can answer... I am just speculating here but could it be due to the fact that P&W belonged to the "hey, we have a product here that is selling like hotcakes, why should we spend money developing something to replace it? Lets just keep the shareholder's happy" school of thought?
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

checkmark  - at least in my opinion. The JT8D established both market share and corporate ties for Pratt. They blew it.
Speedtape - The aspirin of aviation!
