How To Get A Summer Airport Job

Tue Mar 28, 2006 7:29 am

I wasn't quite sure whether to put this here in Tech/Ops or under Non-Aviation, so this can get moved if necessary.

I would really like to get a summer job back home at MSP this year, hopefully as a gate agent, ticket agent, or some related job dealing with customers. I have a few questions about this.

First of all, am I qualified enough for these jobs? I was a high school salutatorian and am an undergrad at Arizona State in the Honors College, as well as a National Merit Scholar. I had my last job for two years, and it delt quite a bit with customers, although it was at a grocery store. Obviously I am otherwise quite knowledgeable about flying, and even here in my dorm people come to me for travel advice. If I'm not quite qualified for these jobs, are there any airport jobs directly relating to travel (no janitorial, no food service) that I could also consider? I wouldn't mind trying out being a ramper (my friends/family say I could use a summer of hard work) as well.

Secondly, how do I go about getting such jobs? Should I just submit resumes to various airlines operating out of MSP and hopefully get contacted, or should I monitor the corporate websites to see if/when positions are open? For NW Airlink, DL connection, et al, would I need to apply to them separately? And what are the actual common job titles for these positions that I might see them listed under on the job postings online?

Third, how far ahead of the summer should I work on this? I go home for the summer on May 10th and am home until the second week of August.

Any advice relating to this would be very appreciated.

Just go online and look under the airline that you want to work for's job openings page. If they have positions available, see if you meet the reqs and if so find out how to apply.

As far as a summer job, I dont know if they will hire you to a position like gate agent, ticket agent, or customer job for only the summer but you never know! I got a job last summer washing the AS overnights on the ramp at SAN and will be going back this summer.....just go for it.

Also, do you think as far as the summer only thing goes, what if I were able to work in PHX for the same airline during the school year, albeit under reduced hours? Is this at all feasible?

You're going to have a tough time finding such a job with an "airline". You may be able to get that with an outsourcing firm. I found it hard to find a part time job while in school with a major and I would be in town year around. The cost and time to train usually means you won't be doing the job on your own for a few weeks.

You also won't be there long enough to get things like travel bennefits as these usually take 90 days or more to gain.

I would personally check at the local FBO. Here in ATW our FBO is in charge of all the airline fueling, so that may be a way to go also. Sure it's not as glamorous as a customer job (if they can be called that) But it's worth a try.

I agree with this... Go to a local airport and see what's available... My first "aviation" job was going to be at a Signature FBO until I found out they were only hiring on the night shift. Definitely a cool way to see some neat aircraft and meet a lot of interesting people

Possible, yes, likely....eeeeh that depends on the airline and your job. I would probably say no, but you never can be sure. One thing is certain, heed the advice given and just go and see what they have to say. You can't get hurt for asking.

I'd also like to get a job at MSP this summer.... ramper would be best for me. I'm 18 and will graduate june 1st. The best thing to do is not to say you will only be there for the summer. when you have to leave in the fall just give a 2 weeks notice.

Well, in submitting a resume I'd kind of have to state that I go to school in Arizona, kind of implying that I'd be gone come mid-August... as for the travel benefits, they're nice but for a summer job I'm not really expecting anything more than money (and experience). I'd like to go into airline management or something like that after I graduate but that's a few years off.

Good way to burn bridges. I'd suggest against this because if you hope to work for them in the future it may come back to haunt you.

For sure! While working there I found a gentleman who offered a demo flight in his DA-20 Diamond Aircraft. I have also gotten a flight in a Cirrus, and a Mooney. Love those FBO's!

While not an FBO, I had an internship at TEB where I saw countless celebs, interesting military aircraft, all the NYC news choppers/reporters, chance to visit the Dassault Falcon sims at flight-safety, even had an offer over the radio for anyone that wanted a one-way trip to FLL on a G-v that was flying there empty... Not sure what would've happened if I took them up on the offer though  Wink

AlexPorter,
Sounds to me like you might be more OVERqualified! You might want to contact all the sources you and others mentioned and see if you could get involved in some sort of internship. They may be more agreeable to changing shifts and locations then.

Go for it--the worst they can say is "No."

Check with the airlines websites. I was just recently hired on with UA doing ramp for the summer in ANC. They have lots of extra flights in the summer for all the tourists that come up here and they hire customer service agents and ramp agents from middle of May thru Labor Day weekend. Keep your eyes open, you never know.

Two rules in aviation, don't hit anything and don't run out of gas, cause if you run out of gas yer gonna hit something.

Be up front with it. I do know they hire extras during the summer months, so just let them know. If you don't tell them and leave, like the other poster said, it will haunt you if you want to come back to them, or even another airline.
