Does The RR RB-211 535C Have A Deep Roar?

Sun Apr 16, 2006 3:54 am

I notest that the Roll Royce RB-211 535 C has the same engine cowl design as the RB-211 22 and 524 B2,C2 and D4. The RB-211 22 and 524 B2,C2 and D4 has a deep roar when they start up and it can be herd almost anyware in the airport, they also has a deep hum during taxi. The 535 E4 do not have this deep roar when it startes up and it has the same engines cowl design as the 524 G and H which also do not have that deep roar. So I thought the 535 C may also have a deep roar at start since it has the older engine cowl. So do it have a deep roar at start up or is it quite like the 535 E4

Actually,
he is correct......The deep low humming that comes from the engines of the L1011 Tristar on startup is loud and I remember hearing a TWA L1011 start up in St. Louis and at first didnt realize at first that this low humming was coming from the plane....It was loud enuff to rattle the windows...I actually tape recorded that sound....I think it has something to do with the starter's mechanisms in the engiens, prolly from bleed air....
Rolls Royce engines always make lots of noise and lost of smoke...Ever watch an L1011 start up in the winter???? The starters on the RR Spey on the BAC One Eleven sound like an air-raide siren....Conways on the VC-10 are supposed to sound unusual too!!!

I guess you can say that I ALSO listen too much to engine sounds too..no need to ridicule anyone over it....get a clue buddy!!!! I could go into a whole description of how different engines and props make certain sounds on different planes and how some people have keen enuff hearing to recognise a plane by the sound it makes....

Just a possibility that these powerplants have/are 3 spool engines that cause this anomally while starting.

Doubtful. All RB211s and also the Trent Series are three spool.

What was the OAT at the time.
Not noticed any particular load noise on the RB211-535Cs at 30degC.
