Checking Airports After Minor Earthquakes

Sat Apr 29, 2006 8:08 pm

A destination I fly to regularly is suffering a lot from minor earthquakes, that is where you notice it but it is not particularly damaging. It brings me to ask when these occur what are the protocols for checking out the runway for damage? I assume that minor tremors will not necessarily show visible damage on the surface of the runway but there may be underlying damage that would show up when an aircraft lands, which is not what you want - anybody know what happens about checking/systems?

Ground penetrating radar can be used to look for voids under runways.

What was the earthquake magnitude? Is the runway built on landfill?

Earthquake magnitude varied between 3.8 and 4.5 - don't know what runway was built on - this is Zakynthos (LGZA) on the greek islands, nearly every day for the past few weeks they have been getting rumbles and people are expecting a big one possibly soon.
