Closing Check-in

a thought just cam acros to me, how do they close chack-in? cause if you still have people in the que, what can you do if they arrive after the time it was ment to close. or do they just reject people who get to the front of the que after the time it is scheduled to close.

They absolutely reject people in line. UA has had a 30-minute policy for a long time, but only recently began enforcing it. It took some frequent travelers by surprise, those who always carry-on, know the airport's layout, and know they can get through security with time to spare. UA doesn't care, they will not issue a boarding pass with less than 30 minutes to go. Other airlines have similar policies.

My solution is to check in 24 hours ahead of time online. Then, I just have to be in the boarding area before the door closes.

As far as closing boarding, boarding can be denied to would-be passengers already in line if they weren't in the boarding area a certain number of minutes before scheduled departure. I believe it's around 20 minutes for most airlines. It would be difficult to prove, but if the boarding agent saw you trucking down the concourse as the last passenger disappeared down the jetway, it is likely you would not get on board. Planes can be late if it just takes a long time to board, but won't be purposely delayed for just one or two passengers, especially in today's cut-throat market.

Remember, there's more to closing out a flight than just getting everyone on board and closing the door ...

You have to clear upgrades (for the FF flyers), you have to clear revenue standby passengers, you have to clear nonrev standby passengers, you have to deal with people who want to change their seat assignments, etc.

In order to do any of that, you have to have a frozen seating chart showing who has actually checked in, otherwise it's impossible to divvy up the remaining seats.

So, at 30mins, if you're not checked in, your seat goes bye-bye and gets reassigned. Most airlines also have a flight closed cutoff as well (for Delta, it's 15 mins) ... even if you ARE checked in, and you miss the cutoff, you don't get on the flight.

I watched a Plat AA flyer go into a screaming fit at a gate agent 'cause she wouldn't let him on the plane - he arrived at 5 mins before depature.

Well, everyone but him was onboard, and they pushed the flight right at the cutoff time. So when he showed up, it was already gone. Boy was he mad. The agent, to her credit, didn't even flinch - poltely reminding him that if he didn't get moving to the next flight's gate, he was going to miss that one as well.

I mostly fly Delta, and it's no question at all - they've got the computer hardwired so it's absolutely impossible to check in less than the cuttoff time (30mins normally, 45mins in ATL). You miss the deadline, it's over to the blue phones for rebooking.

The 30 minute rule at Delta caught me by surprise and I missed my flight a couple years ago.

In the old days things were simpler. I remember one time arriving at the gate 10 minutes after scheduled departure time, the plane was still there so they let me on, and the thing I'll never forget is that the plane was moving before I got to my seat.

Generally check-in closes around 30/40 minutes before the departure time. If there are pax still trying to check-in after this time, the guys on the desks will call up ops and see if they'll let them finish the Q.

The problem is, once you have all the data from check-in, all the calculations are done and passed to the a/c.. so if a pax turns up late, all would have to be recalculated which takes time and will delay the a/c, and so will not be done.

I remember non-reving SFO - ORD - YUL with an hour connection in Chicago. Flight (DC10) departed SFO an hour late and I was on tenderhooks throughout the flight as I just had to get to Montreal and there were no later flights.

After landing I got out of the plane as quickly as I could, asked the gate agent 'Where's the flight to Montreal????' She pointed to the next gate and said RUN, which I did. They grabbed my flight coupon, shoved me into the gateway, and closed the aircraft (B727) door behind me. I don't think I was on the ground for more than 20 minutes!

I don't think they were waiting for me (ID00s usually don't get that treatment), it was more luck of having adjacent gates, me having no hold luggage, and them willing to bend the rules.

In my experience, most airlines don't assign exit row seats until 2 hours or less prior to departure. Even as a very frequent flier on UA, I can't request exit row seats. I believe 1K members can, but I hope to never have to fly enough to find out. However, on AA, which I fly comparatively much less often, I have better luck. When I check in, I'm often given no seat assignment, which is a good sign that I'll be in the exit row when I get to the gate and get a seat. They may do this in case of last-minute equipment changes which might change the location of the exit row, but this is all speculation on my part.

Delta lists the Exit Rows as "Premium Seats" and as such are open to Medallion members at any time online. Bulkhead seats, however, tend to be held until day of departure as they are often used for handicapped passengers. If no chairs on the flight, they then get released usually to premium flyers first, then at the gate, to whomever.

Depends on the airline -- in my experience DL will give you a seat if it's available and you ask nicely any time after you've purchased the ticket.

CO will give you an Exit Row seat if you go to the airport or city ticket office at any time after you buy your ticket and ask nicely (you can also pick an exit row during the online checkin process, up to 24 hours prior to departure).

Speaking of which, I need to visit the airport  Smile

UA will claim that their aircraft don't have exit rows; NW will tell you that there are seats there but you can't have them. (Both of these may have changed in the past two-three years since the lat time I checked)

Thanks for the replies guys. I plan on flying B6 in a couple of months, and since they encourage online check-in (and they have A320s with overwing exits...and I have a thing about safety) I was just wondering how I was suppose to go about doing it.  Wink

Question:

I'm taking an international flight. During the booking procedure, I am informed that I have to check in at least 40 minutes before the flight. I arrive at the terminal 1 hour and 15 minutes before departure. There is a large queue at the check in desk and the passengers are being processed very slowly. 40 minutes before departure, I am still about 10th in line.

Can the airline refuse me both passage and a refund, on the grounds that I hadn't checked in within the stipulated time limit?

I think the answer is basically yes the can refuse passage and, depending on the conditions of the fare, can refuse refund (for example, if it's a non-refundable ticket)

The 'can' doesn't mean will, as in my experience many airlines will try and get you to your destination on a later flight, if they have space. Some may charge you a fee.

Read the Conditions of Carriage - It is your responsibility to be checked in by the airline's deadline.

Oh, and I don't recommend trying this on LCCs, their policies are likely different.

Agreed.. but what if your connecting and they send your connection out without you..? I had this happen at IAD last month. I arrived at Terminal G and had to connect to A3. Which as some of you know is a bus ride and a long walk. I arrived at A3 three minutes before scheduled departure and they had already sent the flight and told me to bad. "You can wait for the next flight.... in 5 hours"...!!!! My in-bound arrived at the scheduled time and I high tailed it over to my connection gate, but still missed my flight. In my mind teh connection time was unreasoniable and with a quick key stroke the Agents at A3 would have seen I was a connecting passanger and my in-bound was on the ground. They should, and could have held the flight for me. I worked for a regional airline for 8 years and we did it all the time.

I hate it when FFs and First/Biz pax behave like that. Be an example to those who don't fly as often, you blowhard...

At AA only Gold and higher members may books exit rows at any time (online or on the phone). Anyone else has to wait until release. I believe this is 2 hours before. This rule has meant many many flights in the exit row for me so I'm very much for it. Big grin

With us exit rows are not available to select online or at the self service kiosks. As a rule, on a busy flight, we typically give them out straight away so as to avoid having issues at the end of check in with passengers that are inelligible to be seated in an exit row (kids, elderly infirmed etc...). The moral of the story is that the earlier you check in the more options you have. Get there late and you get what is available and nothing more.

Two weeks ago I flew JNB-CPT on SAA, 9am flight. My wife and I were on standby, they closed the flight at 8:45 after calling pax out of the queue. As the crow flies it is about 150m from standby counter to gate, and in the 5 min it took us to get there I was shown as offloaded in the system. Quick upgrade to business class later and we pushed back exactly on time.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Well I doubt you will have that experience again, considering G is now closed. This was an unfortunate, irregular occurence. I'm sure that UA did not think of a G-to-A connection when planning their minimum connection times at IAD since they never really intended to operate both concourses.

Now, having said that, I'm sure the gate agent could have been a little nicer. But what else could he or she have done? The next flight was in 5 hours. When I end up in situations like that, I just ask for a club pass and go have a drink. Most of the time, if you ask nicely, they honor that request, since there's nothing else that anyone can really do.
