Whats The Similarities Between The TF-39 And CF-6?

Thu Jun 01, 2006 5:52 am

Since the C-5 galaxy is changing there engines from TF-39 and replacing them with CF-6-80 it got me to thinking. I always thought the TF-39 and CF-6 was basically the same engine. Until I saw how much bigger the the diameter of TF-39 is compaired to the CF-6-50 ( 100 inches vs 86 inches). Also the TF-39 has a shorter engine cowl than the CF-6. Is the only reason the CF-6 is based on the TF-39 is because of the core and that they both high by-pass turbo fans?

The TF39 has a strange 1 and a half stage fan. The first set of blades only goes out to 50% span. Everything outboard of that is fixed. The CF6 has a more normal single stage fan.

The TF-39 was the predecessor to the CF6 family and is more closely related to the CF6-6D/K engines (found on the DC-10-10) than the CF-6-80. The -50 and -80 series engines have additional LPC stages that greatly supercharge the air that is fed to the core, giving them much more thrust than the TF-39/CF-6-6 motors.
