FX Career Questions.

is anyone here a current FX employee? i'm looking into trying to join you all and have a bunch of questions. would anyone be willing to help me out with those questions or finding the right way to go about getting hired?

is it possible just to work the ramp at major hubs or are peronnel cross trained to do everything? as much as i am willing to learn everything possible, i'm a ramp rat at heart, it's what i know and love and what i'm best at.

where do i apply? i checked the website when i had some time but found that there are a bunch of seperate companies to apply to. to be honest, i'm lost right now.

what kind of starting wages can i expect starting off?

what benefits are available form the job, i.e. medical etc...

i curently work for an airline, and the ability to nonrev is by far the greatest perk. is jumpseating on FX a posability as an agent? this is a big deal to me!

what is the actual structure of an operation? who answers to who? where i come from, agents work the ramp with oversight from us supervisors who work hand in hand with daily managment.

in terms of promotion, is the sky the limit? i'm a supervisor now but would expect not to be hired in a managerial role right off the bat.

what is training like? does it include a trip to MEM?

that's all for now, i'm sure i'll think of more along the way...

ok, have a few more:


how soon before i am eligable for vacation time? is it the usual year?

how long is the new-hire probabtion period?

does the company allow shift trades among employees? that's one of the perks available to me at my current airline.

who does the deicing?

do new hires have to pay for thier own uniform? what is the uniform? how strict is the uniform policy?


if anyone has any info that they think might be helpful feel free to email me. any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Great questions. I only know that they do take ramper apps and interviews in MEM but as far as other stations I really don't know. Since I don't know where you are I can't offer any help but ask someone at your local ramp.

I don't think so however SOME ramps may have you marshall or possibly drive a tug, I'm not sure.

I suggest you go to FedEx.com, all your questions are answered there. I'm pretty sure that fedex doesn't have their own ramp agents, except for maybe MEM. Example, LAX which is a big hub, even has a pilot base, doesn't have ramp agents. The only way to work with Fedex planes is to be an aircraft package handler at the hub locations. Those guys are responsible for loading and unloading aircraft. Easy job because they just load the big containers, they don't actually have to lift much. I know that Fedex likes to hire from within so if there was a managerial position, chances are it will be filled by someone already working there. Your gonna have to start small. Why do you want to work at Fedex?

Well I'm not at a major hub, but over the course of a typical week I will be: load captain, belly captain, Loader operator, Top-side crew, Belly crew, Postal Crew, work the sort (down/upload) containers. I also perform gatekeeper duties. I'm qualified on most GSE equipment. I marshall the plane into the gate and marshall out for push back.

I would recommend going to the station of your choice and ask management about hiring sessions. (Remember to bring your resume to show airline experience, although not necessary)!

It all depends on what class of ramp you work at. (usually starting pay is about $11-15 an hour). At least I think, it is.

Jumpseating was restricted to widebody aircraft only, however I believe that we no longer have Jump seating privilege's!

Most ops have handlers (NON-DOT and Material) that are lead by Ramp Agents who have a shift manager they report, who reports to a Senior manger. Most Ramp Agents run the sorts and ops.

You most likely would have to complete our in house management training program first. Because you may supervise RTD's you may have to learn to drive tractor trailers for check rides.

If you are training for management, more than likely you will see a few trips to MEM or IND.

When in the first couple of months you can acquire vacation and personal days (2) & floating holidays (2).

Don't know for management. Employees can sign up to work extra shifts. Due to the nature of the business management are always on call!!

Upon hiring you are given a set amount for the fiscal year after that you pay out of the pocket. The policy is very strict, but it depends upon management enforcement.

Every person that I have any contact with in ops and the ramp are fedex employees.

Nope, just about each and every ramp would have ramp agents.

However in foreign countries, some government require that the services are contracted out. I believe that China is one of the countries, so it is extremely important that our flight makes it into the china markets on time. If not you are put to the back of the offload line and this can cause delays which may ripple across the entire network.

I used to work at Menzies, loading and unloading cargo/pax 747/340/md11. I would have rather done that than, be on my knees loading and unloading bags in a 737/md11, in small compartments.

This is true and Japan as well I believe.I'm not sure about UAE and India.

I don't know where you are except socal and at least all the ramp folks I've been in contact with in LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK, and SJC all had fedex id badges and not "vendor" badges.
