Road Trips/ Field Service

Fri Aug 04, 2006 11:55 am

Any Other Mechanics go on Road Trips/Field Service alot? Any Good Stories, Places, Broken Things, etc.....

In the past 2 Months I have been to LIH OGG ITO KOA (When helping with go!)
And FSD (Change a tire) GRB (T/R that stuck in the deployed position on landing) and BMI (Fuel Leak) add AVP and Thats all I can remember. These are great because you have to use alot of smarts to use very minimal equipment to get the plane back up. I was hoping someone with more years in the biz have some crazy stories, I have yet to get really interesting things but here is my favorite:

AVP- Had a CRJ-200 get struck by lightninh exploding the winglet and fried the Flux valve among other things. Got a ferry permit for flight with CA compass and standby and speed-taped the rest of what was left of the winglet. The guy at the FBO there thought Bomba was crazy!

I went to Terre Haute IN. for a SD360 that blew a main tire on landing,it was during Desert Shield and there was an AF Reserve unit on the field (F-16's) the were quite anxious to have the runway back, are jack was screwed up and the commander came out and informed us "if we need to scramble,we will bulldoze this aircraft off the runway" the captain, the other amt and myself just looked at the crippled box like aircraft and than the commander and than busted out laughing,he wasn't happy but he did get us a good jack! Like you posted a field service is a good way to learn decision making, you can make good $$$ and it is a good way to see other places, even of it is an airport.

B737 with broken NLG Torsion link on Landing.Causing Swerving [no steering input] & rested on the Runway, closing Calicut Airport [Table top on hill].
No Facilities.
We drove from BLR to Calicut by road in nights thru the Ghats [Peak mountains].Got a tractor & 200 personnell from the Airport pushing the Aircraft & towed it to the Bay.I never thought it was possible in 1994.

The Best Recovering an Aircraft B737 that landed on the Side of the runway at BLR in 1996.Everyone thought it was a Write off as the LH gear had collapsed on Landing impact.
It took Three months & today its Still flying.Fantastic Mx Work  bigthumbsup

I may not win often, but I damn well never lose!!! ;)
