A Question On Transition From Star To Approach

So, i was looking at the STAR's and instrument approaches for EGJJ (Jersey). If the landing runway is RWY9 and the I was approaching from the North it seem logical to me to select the STAR via JW Runway 09



I then take a look at the instrument approaches for Rwy 09, there is an ILS/DME/NDB and a VOR/DME.



For both cases it seems that I would need to fly to either JW NDB or JSY VOR then follow a heading that is pretty much West. But, the STAR has me approaching from the west, so my question is, how are you meant to transition from the STAR to the instrument approach (assuming no ATC vectoring)? Would the hold be used? Am I really stupid and missed something? Thanks in advance!

I'm not a pilot but will have a stab at this.

I believe that in good weather you would probably fly the first part of the STAR and then once in visual you would be cleared for a visual approach.

In poorer weather you may be cleared from the north east direct to the 6 mile fix or if it's ILS you may be given vectors to intercept the localizer.

You would not normally have to fly the downwind leg unless, the glideslope or DME was not working or perhaps for traffic separation.

Ok well if I was to make that approach with no atc etc I'd fly the STAR to SHARK. Then fly inbound to the JW NDB at 3000ft. Leave the JW on a heading of 239degrees decending to 1600ft by 6dme I-JJ. At 6DME make the right turn onto finals and use the ILS.

If its a nice day you may be visual with the runway at SHARK and can make a visual approach.

I would guess though that most trafic is vectored straight for the ILS (never been to Jersey correct me if I'm wrong).

The STAR depicted is intended to take traffic in sequence to the final approach course. You would then intercept the final approach course for the approach you are 'cleared' to fly from SHARK (8 nm final) heading East.

Since it's not a full approach plate depiction, I can't tell, but my guess is that in a lost comm situation (i.e. own nav, no ATC vectors) you would descend in the hold at the JW NDB...

EDIT: for the transition route from the VOR in the STAR to the ILS approach, you are flying to the SHARK intersection, and from there you assume the 085 magnetic heading to transition to the JW NDB, and descend in the hold to intercept the glideslope.
