777 Wing Ultimate Load Test Photos/Video

Tue Aug 29, 2006 7:31 am

I'm looking for photos or video of the 777's ultimate load wing test.

I believe the PBS series, "21st Century Jet" filmed the test, in which the wing appeared to be deflected upward at about a 70 or 80 degree angle before failing.

Actually, any such wing test photos/footage would be great. So far, I've only been able to find blury photos and poor angles.

Thanks very much in advance.  Smile

Yes there is a wing test section in the PBS "The building of a 21st century jet".
I have the DVD collection which I brought from E-bay about a year ago.

Thanks, Starlionblue, but it's listed as "not available". I can't seem to find the DVDs for sale anywhere else, either....not Ebay, not barnesandnoble.com, not half.com.....nowhere.

Does anyone have a source with the DVD set in stock?

If you click on the "Order it used" link on Amazon (on the right) Amazon can try to get it for you. I have used this service on occasion and the hit rate is pretty decent. You specify condition and max price. You won't be charged until they find it.

Otherwise try here: http://www.boeingstore.com/catalog/i...on=product&theParentId=166&id=4371

It's a very hard find for the DVD set.
There was only 2-3 listing in E-bay which was the only source I could find from a year ago. I even tried amazon.com and barnesandnobles.com with no luck.

However I do have a copy set on VHS tape which I borrowed the originals from my aviation college to watch at home.
However the DVD set includes more of the engine design and testing program which the VHS doesn't include.

It's 3 VHS tapes long.

Cool, they had it on back order a few weeks ago. I just had my VHS copy put onto DVD by a friend. The quality is ok, but shows the signs of being copied from a 10 year old tape.

I actually recorded all of the episodes when the series was on in November, 1997. Quality isn't very great because a) I don't have cable, and b) trying to record TV on VHS with a VCR isn't too great. If you can't get the videos, give me a week and I'll try to get some photos here.

Any pictures or articles about such tests on the web? It would be really interesting to see.

Not as strange as the RCA Selectavision Video Disk player...the disks were 12 inches in diameter and had to be flipped over halfway through the movie  Wink

Video disk was never big in Europe. My parents had a P1502 VCR in the 70s though. This was way pre-Betamax or VHS. Massive machine.

I told you I'd get the video as I promised. Because of this thread, it is my first time using YouTube.com, so I learned a little! Anyways, I apologize about the wait, you see, I'm in college now, so I live 2 hours away from my house, which contains my library of airplane videos and books. Because of this, I had to wait for the 3 day weekend to drive home. Anyways, I hope this is what you wanted.

I've never seen that before. Wow. Did both wings really fail simultaneously? If so, that says a lot about consistency and quality control. Amazing.

Yes they both had to be lifted up for the destructive wing failure test which they can measure the load factor which it has to meet or exceed the 1.5 rating. This video clearly shows it passed the test more than it's required.

I wonder how many G's this aircraft have to pull, to put the same amount of stress on the wings as shown here.
If people are afraid of seing the wings flex in flight, and has a image about the wing breaking, should really watch this video. I think that would help alot.

A typical airliner G tolerance is +3.5/-1. Since the limit is 50% over that, that would be 5.25G. What the "real" limit is I do not know.

Also, this is not like flying a fighter. Airliner pilots don't keep loading the wing if the Gs are rising. The objective is to unload the wing if you reach high G loads as long as you're not approaching a hill or something.
