Worst Routing Ever

Tue Sep 05, 2006 6:59 am

I challenge anyone to find an example of stranger routing than this:

Dispatchers: Actually re-routing aircraft in bizzare fashion just to win the contest doesn't count. OPNL, I'm looking in your direction....  Wink

What on earth can cause a routing like that? I know thunderstorms can get in the way, but that seems pretty outrageous.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

N314AV. I believe it belongs to some sort of photo-mapping or survey outfit.

Sure enough...

Though, in terms of actual IFR routing, aerial mapping is about as kosher as:

Well look at the past flight times... some as short as 14 minutes. The strange routing is probably because the airports are so close, having the plane fly direct to destination would cause a headache to both pilots and controllers...

Quick story...

The other day a Netjets flight launched off 4L at EWR enroute to TEB... TEB is 11NM from EWR heading 041 (so basically a pilot can take off 4L at EWR and will overly fly TEB without touching the controls). As soon as the controllers at TEB saw the flight pop up on the scope they tried calling NY departure to get the EJA flight a straight in for runway 1 at TEB... Unfortunately the flight was being vectored around for the ILS to 6 before they could get the message through....

If the plane took off 4L at EWR and landed 1 at TEB, the entire flight would probably be less than a minute... When the plane landed the pilots told the controllers they were happy they didn't get it because they wouldn't have even had time to run the checklists  Smile

Flightaware (unfortunately) only covers the US and Canada. It's an excellent site, though. Just yesterday, they introduced a wonderful feature that allows you to see how many aircraft of each type are aloft at any given moment:

http://flightaware.com/live/aircrafttype

I find this feature to be incredibly addictive. I've been keeping a window open, watching for odd aircraft types, and hoping they're flying into one of my local airports. Now I just need a decent camera so I can go record them for future "Odd Aircraft" threads...

*EDIT* - Right now, there's a Grumman TBM Avenger cruising from Florida to Arkansas at FL280.

It also works with a handful of Transatlantic flights, or at least I can get a nice flightplan from there (except for the precise NAT information when flying in a NAT).  Wink

I haven't started my commercial yet (although I've taken the ground school for it  Wink ), but as I understand it, when these maneuvers are properly executed, they are not considered aerobatic (bank angle <70 deg, pitch attitude < 30 deg) ?

It seems to get a bit confused when the flight starts / ends outside the US!

Quoting 2H4 (Thread starter):

I've seen so many bizzare ones in the last 20-25 years I wouldn't even know where to begin. What most of them have in common was that a line/area of thunderstorms was between origin and destination. If the weather is lined up parallel to the normal route between origin and destination, all that's usually needed are deviations, but the more the weather goes perpendicular to the normal route between origin and destination, the worse the re-roiute is.

As far as long re-routes go, traffic out of Florida for MDW usually comes up over ATL and SDF (IIU), but when there's weather blocking that route, it's not at all unusual to get routed out west via Tallahassee (SZW) and STL and then north. Sometimes SZW to SGF or MCI before they turn you back towards MDW.

On the short ones, it's also pretty ugly sometimes. I recall a SAT-DAL flight that had to go all the way west to INK before he could get around the east-west line that was cutting Texas in half. MSY-DAL via INK is another one...
