Nose Gear Spray Deflector

Sat Sep 23, 2006 2:16 am

I though I had posted this once before, but I think it got lost or deleted.

My question for any who would know is:
Why does the DC-9 ; MD-80/90 ; B717 have a nose gear spray deflector?

I have never seen it on any other aircraft and it seems curious on this one. The only thing I could think of why its there is that that it would prevent water ingestion into the engines, but the location of the engines on these aircraft would seem to make it irrelavent.

Anyone have any insight?

It is to prevent water ingestion by the engines. Without it the spray would go up over the wing and directly into the intakes. The 727 and many other tailmounted engine aircraft have chines molded into the nose tires to deflect spray away from the engines.

Not only do they deflect spray but also sand and gravel.Scandinavian runways are always sanded during winter and the main gears are equipped with deflectors,as well.

Some operators use chined nosewheel tires but these do not deflect sand or gravel

Thanks, HAWK21M. I did a search after that post and couldn't find it. Either the search functions are not intuitive, or I just don't get how to make them work.

Sorry to beat a dead horse.

No, thank you for bringing this up again. I wanted to ask/search this question, but I had no idea what that doohickey was called, so I didn't know what to search on....
