Why No Papi On W/B Rwys At LAX?

Wed Oct 18, 2006 1:58 pm

Title says it all. Why are there PAPI's on the east bound runways at LAX and not on the westbound? Is it just not necessary because of the ILS? Is this unusual?

I know that a PAPI cannot be used as one of the things you need to be able to see to continue below minimums on an instrument approach - a VASI can be. That might have something to do with it. Other than that, I have no idea.

A visual aid would be valuable on all runways regardless of installations of ILS. The answer is as simple as the airport is too cheap. They found plenty of money to waste on the glass light towers at the entrance to the passenger terminal area. But they don't have adequate lighting on all runways and taxiways.

I don't really have much to contribute - just wanted to mention that I was planning on starting a thread on this very topic sometime in the near future! I've had the same question running through my head for a few weeks now.

Does LAX typically use visual approaches when able (when the smog's not too bad  Wink)? Or do they stick to the ILS?

Is there a particular method of ensuring your glideslope on a visual approach where there is no visual cue?

Mostly visual unless airport is under instrument conditions.

Visual approaches are backed up by the glide slope if that runway is equipped with an ILS as is the case for LAX. So the papi lights are really redundant.
