"rain" Inside An MD 11

Fri Oct 20, 2006 2:15 am

When I was on my AMS-BON-LIM flight and we landed in BON I noticded there were drops that were falling down from the overhead bin onto the window. Is this just condensation from the air conditioning or could it be something else.

Thanks in advance

Cold air conditioning and high humidity = condenscension.

That is my principal memory from a hundred thousand miles in the back end of a Delta DC-8 back in the sixties - cold water dripping on me from the condensation.

I've seen other planes - Cessna 404 comes to mind - blow snow out the air conditioning ducts.

Air conditioning systems have devices to remove the moisture from the air before it gets to the cabin. On modern aircraft this is done very efficiently. On older aircraft the system became overpowered in high outside humidity. The worst I encountered was the Vickers VC10. This used rootes blowers to provide the pressurised air, and I remember that when you descended into the Gulf in summer water would pour out of the air conditioning system in the roof of the cabin. As the aircraft was flying nose up, this all came out at the back. You never sat in the back four rows or you would be drenched!

Has nothing to do with the water separator bags. Its like the condensation on the outside of a glass of ice water. The moisture forms on the cool ceiling panels not inside the ducts.

Don't really know if they are clogged MEL but I do know they get overwhelmed in the hot and humid summertime. The DC-9 is notorious for this. The last few rows would get soaked on rotation and after nwa did their new interior the the f/a call and light system on each row would go crazy lights would flash on and off and the chime would go crazy as well because each individual row had it's own curcuit card and when wet ...well you know. So about the only thing we could do was dry the curcuit card, sop up the water and change the coleser bags or socks as we called them......

Insulation blankets? They are installed next to the skin (with a small open area for breathing). Its the ceiling panels that are cold and the air is hot humid, condensation forms of the cold surface.

I got the same thing in a 732 once. By row 4. It was seriously pouring. The floor and seats were drenched big time. I just loved the how the passengers nervously asked the F/As if that was normal Big grin

I've seen it several times in HNL on a 747. When the aircraft's pushed back, condensation sometimes pours out of the PSU. I always watch for it now, when in HNL.
Not as easy as originally perceived

Thats what Im saying. With Insulation Blankets located between the Decorative surface & Inner skin,Could such high condensation still occur.
