SXM Runway Length Question...

Sat Nov 04, 2006 3:51 am

First of all I am sorry if this was discussed at a previous date here on a.net, but I was just wondering about SXM's runway length. I am fairly certain that SXM's runway 09/27 is about 7000 feet long. If this is true (more or less), then how is it that A340's, B747-400's, and other large aircraft can operate in and out of there?
I know that at LGA, the largest aircraft that currently operates daily is the B757, and, on occasion, the B767. LGA's runways are both 7000 feet long as well. Yet we dont see any 747's or 340's flying in and out of there. Just to make things clear, I do know and realize that flights scheduled into and out of LGA are within some sort of maximum distance (from the airport itself). I think its something like 1200 miles maximum; Maybe even less (I guess thats why you don't see any flights going to or coming from the West Coast, for example). Due to less fuel needed for these "shorter" flights out of LGA, this may be why the 75's and 76's are the largest aircraft operating out of there.
Anyhow, I was just curious why SXM's similar runways (length) to LGA's can handle larger airplanes.
Thanks for any info.

At LGA, the gates allow only limited wingspan. This is not the case at SXM. The larger aircraft aren't needed at LGA anyway. Also, the rwy at SXM is 7700 ft long. Sometimes that can make a difference.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

Runway 9/27 is just about 6600' long.....Most of the large aircraft you see at SXM will be making a stop soon after leaving SXM, most common place I've found is Antigua which has a much longer runway IIRC, gas and go!  Smile

http://www.worldaerodata.com says 7708 ft. As I recall it was less than 7100 a few years ago.

You remember Kahului has a 7000 ft runway, and 767s leave from there on 3000-4000 mile trips.

I sit corrected for sure!

3800 NM from OGG to IAH when CO had the non-stop.

Statute miles, you mean. But supposedly DL did have a 763 nonstop OGG-ATL, and that is 3800+ nm.

The A340s go nonstop back to Europe but the B747s have to make a fuel stop actually.
