777-300 Boxes On Top Of Fuselage

Mon Nov 20, 2006 1:10 am

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been asked before -- I've done a few searches and could not come up with an answer.

What equipment is located inside those boxes on the top of the fuselage on a 777-300? I noticed this last week at NRT while looking at the JL planes. I looked at some pictures on the database and some 773s seem to have only one, while other ones have two.

Looks like your bog standard satellite housing for onboard internet or phone access.

JAL does have a contract with Boeing to have their long haul fleet outfitted with the Connexion service, although that is now defunct.

They are satellite dishes. Not all aircraft have them because if you are only using the satellite for phones and radio, you don't need a dish any more. Most of our B777 and B744 have flat plate antennas, one on each side of the fuselage. They are nearly invisible.

The frontal big antenna is the Boeing Connexion antenna which is going to be useless end this year. As for the rear big antenna, it's the Satcom antenna. Used for satellite communication.

As for what TristarSteve said, this is the antenna plate.
