VC-25A Flight Deck Photo

Thu Nov 30, 2006 7:14 am

So, while I was searching for particularly devious photos for the Tech/Ops Aircraft Recognition Competition, I ran across this photo:

It's the only photo I've ever seen of the VC-25A flight deck. Granted, virtually no details are visible, but I wonder if those of you who are familiar with the 747 flight deck can spot any differences. It would be interesting to hear what you 747 experts see.

The flight deck is really not all that different then any other 747. Now step behind the cockpit door to the communication area.....!!!!

I understand that the VC-25 is based on the 747-200, but does the cockpit bear any resemblance to the 747-400?
Sorry, I was on the landline

I don't remember seeing any smiling chimps in the standard 747 cockpits.

In a video documentary going back from I believe was the Discovery Channel, the cockpit resembles that of a 747-300 with the upgraded engine indication panel:

Very anticlimactic, I know. But it is what it is...

As KFLLCFII says, the VC-25 is based on the 742, but has many of the updated avionics and so forth of later marks.

IIRC, the VC-25 has EADI and EHSI displays, which are not common on 747 Classics.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

The overhead hatch seems different and there is an auxilary cb panel.

Might just have set the camera on the F/E panel.

Well from the photo posted by 2H4, it seems as though the overhead doesn't match up to any conventional -200 or -400 overhead panel (see the pics below) notice that after the circuit breakers there are 4 gray levers that i can't find on any overhead of a conventioal 747. (im not talking about the fire extinguishers, because the one in the picture at the start of the thread these knobs are to the far left of the panel)

To me, that upper corner looks fairly similar to the 742...

Could be the controls to the inflight refueling system?

Hmm, perhaps they are the chaff/flare/active camouflage/warp drive switches?

I can't for the life of me remember the name of the documentry that KFLLCFII mentions, but it did have a very brief view of the flight deck. I would venture to guess that it also features the latest and greatest in navigation gizmos as well.

I think the only thing sensitive on a VC-25 flightdeck is the flightplan.

Yeah, what's up with that?  Confused

Oh, I'd say there are probably quite a few sensitive areas of the cockpit. There are anti-missile devices, such as chaff/flares on these aircraft right?
...and no doubt other equipment operated from within the cockpit.

No, there's not. Now look right here please:

Well, the #1 fire handle can be seen on the right edge of the AF1 pic. With the 4 other switches left of it... Looks like a 742/3 overhead to me...

To the left of the fire handle(s) are the flight control cut-off swtiches, on the classics. I imagine the VC-25A has the switches in the same place.

I'm not sure I see these levers. Aft (or more properly) aft and out board of the CB panel is the overhead escape hatch. There appears to be some difference between the classics and this bird.
