What Is The Difference Between A PCU & A PCA?

Wed Dec 06, 2006 11:22 pm

Could anybody help me? I am wondering what the difference is between a Power Control Unit and a Power Control Actuator. This is in reference to flight controls.

Some manufacturers use different terms for different styles of actuator on the same aircraft. For example, an actuator that operates a ground spoiler is an on/off type actuator- up or down. But on the flight spoiler next to it, a similar actuator is capable of modulating, in other words the spoiler can move in small increments any where from retracted to fully extended.

I dont think that would be the reason for the different terms. Its just that the Manufacturer called a PCU a PCA on the next model & it stuck.

Names are "invented" by bright young people with no field experience or history. Naming convention failures by engineering are the nightmare of mechanics and material control people.
So, what is a THS?

A couple of (probably incomplete) lists:

Airbus acronyms: http://www.rosboch.net/aviation.htm#AirbusAcronyms
Boeing acronyms: http://www.rosboch.net/aviation.htm#BoeingAcronyms

Thats another one like the SAM on the B757 which reads as Stablizer Trim and Elevator Assymetrical Module,so shouldn't it be STEAM.

On the A330 course, as we were getting into the nitty-gritty of the CBT (computer based training) we would end each day with a de-brief. On asking the instructor about all the acronyms, he told us that there was a dark windowless office somewhere in TLS that had 6-10 Airbus employees just working on acronyms. Boeing has its' fair share, but the 'bus CBT really exaggerates with the Ferris Bueller teacher (Ben Stein) 'anyone, anyone' monotone narration.

Because if there were windows, they're realise that not everything has to be made into an acronym!
