Who Are The Highest Paid Mechanics?

Sat Jan 27, 2007 2:39 am

I've heard that WN has the highest paid mechanics, even though they are not union. Is this true?

Others have told me that AA is the best place to work.

Any insights would be helpful.

Just to let you know WN tech's are union members. I don't have the contract book to let you know specifics on wages.  airplane

I believe the UPS mechs are highest paid and they are union. For air carriers WN is the highset paid and are also union. They both make a lot of money and their companies make profits, win-win if you ask me.

I don't quite understand whar you mean,I see you are a flight student,if you get a pilot job with a major carrier you will see the benefits of a union, they do have their drawback, but on the operational side(pilots, mechanics)they are necessary. Legally the companys cannot try to stop a work group from unionizing.

Yes, they avoided bankruptcy and their stock went from around $2 to $37.

You should probably change the title to: Who are the highest paid mechanics in the US?

Wouldn't the mechs who work on AF1 be high paid? I also thought FX would be up there.

If it were not for unions, workers would be making lower wages, have less benefits, and be at the mercy of managment for everything. Also the flying public has a much safer aircraft, unions fight for safety issues that other wise would be ignored. Unless you become a manager, you'll understand some day why union shop is important. Don't believe everything you hear, the media has a good way ( along with some fellow a.netters ) of making unions look bad, when they really are important.

Do they make mistakes, bad decisions at times, Yes! But then how many CEO's have made bad decisions at the workers expenses!

The AMT's at SWA are currently the highest paid among US based airlines as others have pointed out. They are represented by AMFA. However they are still under the contract the Teamsters negotiated before they switched to AMFA. For highest paid overall that title goes to the guys over at UPS. They are represented by the IBT.

As far as AA being the best place to work I guess it depends on who you talk to. We took so pretty big cuts to stay out of BK four years ago. However we were lucky in the sense that unlike some other carriers our retirements did not end up in the hands of the PBGC.

What exactly are "aircraft companies"? You are right to wonder about the legality of "aircraft companies" trying to stop unions from forming. If a company is a to aggressive in doing so they can find themselves in legal trouble with the government. And could you please tell me what happened to AA as a result of the unions.

By your profile I see that you are a flight student. I'm guessing your ultimate goal is to become a professional pilot. Well if you are lucky enough to get a job working as an airline pilot you can thank the pilot unions for what you make.

Why would you think that?

I'm guessing those guys are members of the U.S. Airf Force, in which case they get paid what their rank and time-in-service affords them. Working on AF1 should make no difference.

If they're not Air Force, then they are government contractors...they don't get a whole lot either.

As I see it, UPS AMT's are the highest paid AMT's working for a US air carrier.

Nobody said that mechanics pay from other countries couldn't be listed. On the contrary I for one would be very interested to compare compensation with my peers from other countries.

I wouldn't say they are necessary. Delta Tech Ops is one of the better aircraft maintenance organizations in the world and there are no unions representing any of the groups within Tech Ops.

Hi,

My Dad has worked in maintainence for AA for nearly 30 years. I'm not sure exactly what he makes but I believe that compared to most other U.S. carriers he is paid well. Many AMT's from the likes of UA and CO have come over to AA because of better pay and benefits and I know that he came out of the post 9/11 pay cuts unscathed.

As with most (if not all) U.S. carriers pay rates increase with service. One drawback with AA (as I understand it) is that you "top out" relatively quickly, and thus he has been at the same level for a number of years.

Regards
So long 701, it was nice knowing you.

My dad is mx for CO and while he gets paid decently after being there for 10+ years, everyone he works with is absolutely jealous of the new contract that UPS mx is looking to negoitate... I forgot the actual numbers, but it was something like they are asking for $60 an hour and would accept $50 an hour

Anyone working as an AMT at UPS has authority to release all aircraft, except those going on ETOPS routing. Additinal training is required with no premium pay.

I think he makes it quite clear myself...You claim that Delta Tech Ops being among the best in the world. (not disputing it) His claim is for that you are the third from the bottom in pay...Well SWA, UPS are union and are at the top of the game in terms of pay and bennies and both are union. I think that answers the question. Unions are a necessary evil whether you agree or not with them. I worked for two unions in the last 17 yrs and I have issues with them also but I am non union now but make very good money and they have better work rules for the hourly mechanics than I ever had being in a union. That said, I know for a fact is not out of the goodness of their heart that they pay me well it is the fact they want to keep the unions at bay by providing good salary and benefits.

I had a proffesor in college, a former airline executive, who once asked a question in regards to this. He said "Do you think management will take advantage of you if you let them?" Without missing a beat he said "Damn right they will."

You put the decimal in the wrong place. Actually, i found out from an inside source that they're asking for $600 an hour and will accept $500, no less under any circumstances. After all, qualified mechanics are hard to come by these days.  Wink
