Crazy Or Just An Enthusiast? (TJPS Related)

Sun Jan 28, 2007 9:05 pm

So I'm enjoying some free time back home in my hometown of Mayaguez, PR. It's 3 AM and I can't sleep. No one wants to go drink and i don't want to fall asleep watching reruns of "Miami Vice". So, I hop into my car and decide to head to Ponce (PSE) (1hr 10 min. drive) to watch Jetblue 739and CO336 arrive from JFK and EWR respectively both around 4:30 AM!!! Just for the record, PSE has become my favorite spotting airport in PR. It has a completely unobstructed view of the runways, taxiways and hangar from all sides. So I brought my camera and snapped away. SInce I was already there i decided to wait til the outbound flights to JFK/EWR departed each around 6AM. I must say it was a spectacular take/off, especially from that short 6900 ft. runway. From my estimation, both CO 738 and B6's A320 rotated less than 5500 ft down the runway centerline. I'm sure the pleasant 68 deg. temperatures helped that as well as what appeared to be a relatively light load of pax. Also, i noticed that despite Easterly winds, both A/C landed on runway 30 but took off from runway 12. Is this because of insufficient space to backtrack on 12? That's what I figured anyway. Finally, and believe me this is no joke, can my spontaneuous "nocturnal" spotting be construed as sign of mild crazyness of amd I just a fairly normal enthusiast?

Cheers,
-Vik-

Crazy is a strange concept as it is a relative term. For "normal" people, yes, your behavior would be absolutely ridiculous. I mean, after all, who drives to the airport in the middle of the night just to WATCH airplanes!?!?

Then on the other hand, for us that truly understand the beauty, incredible design and awesome, captivating power of airplanes, it would be perfectly normal.  Smile

I consistently drive out the the airport at night to watch the cargo ops, so I completely understand. Granted, at RDU, the departures I watch happen for the most part between 10PM and midnight, and I don't usually stay for the arrivals at 3AM. They fly over my house anyway, so I don't have to be at the airport bored and freezing for 3 hours to see them  biggrin

Happy Spotting!

I don't know if Crazy would be the right word as majority of Folks in this world are crazy  Smile

Yes but driving at nights to watch some Aircraft could be termed overboard.

Personally since I work on the Tarmac 5 nights/week I get my Excess share of Aircraft,so Im not that keen in the Day to watch some more. However If Im not at work at the Airport for some time. Then I'd def want to check out those Aircraft.

Bottom line....Do what you think gets you Happy.

Thanks for the replies. I've been so busy in the theoretical aspects of Aerospace Engineering as a grad student that i haven't gotten to enjoy some of the lighter aspects of aviation like just heading out and spotting. I have to say it felt great.
