747-8I: Payload, Fuel Density, Range And USG

Fri Mar 09, 2007 3:22 am

I was watching the Boeing web site relating to 747-8I Payload Range Capability (page 10) and I'd like to know:

1.- What does mean "Nominal" Fuel Flow[/i] ?
2.- What does mean the "USG" acronym when Boeing talks about Fuel Density 6.7 lb / USG ?
3.- Is there some relation between density and fuel quality?

Thanks in advance  Smile

Quoting SKY1 (Thread starter):

For nominal read average.

U. S. gallon

Fuel density varies with temperature; has nothing to do with quality.

Thank you, SEPilot.

Then, a Fuel Density of 6.7 lb / USG is an average/medium density on an average temperature?

SG changes with the type of fuel and temp, 6.7 lb / USG works out to an SG of 0.8 kg/l, anywhere between 0.77 and 0.83 can be seen when you purchase fuel.

In asia a SG around 0.78-0.79 kg/l is normal, so with a capacity of 241,619l on the 748i, and SG of 0.78 would give a fuel load of 188462 kg, with a SG of 0.8 it would be 193295 kg, which means a range reduction of 4833 kg, or around 20-30 minutes, or around 200-250 nm less range.

I find it strange that maximum structural payload is listed as 295,000 lb for the airport compatibility brochure when everywhere else it is listed as 308,000lb.  Confused

Uum... if you are referring to the freighter it shows in the January 2007 version of the airport compatibility brochure as 295400lb. The passenger version shows as 168300lb. No doubt there were other values for earlier iterations of the 747-8.
