Difference Between 2nd/3rd Class Medical?

Sun Mar 18, 2007 4:20 am

Thinking of going for my PPL, wondering what the major differences are between the Second Class Medical Certificate and Third Class Medical Certificate. I know third class is adequate for PPL training, but is there any advantage to getting a 2nd Class? Obviously I don't want/need a 1st class as I'm not an airline pilot.

The biggest difference is that in the 3rd class they ask if you're breathing, in the 2nd class you have to prove it. . .

3rd class lasts longer. If all you want is your private license the 3rd class will do fine. If you plan to move up later to commercial or ATP you may want to think about getting a 2nd or 1st class just to prove you can. It would not be good to get a commercial license and then figure out you have a medical problem preventing you from getting a 2nd class medical and therefore not being able to use the commercial license.

If you have no desire to eventually fly for money then just get the 3rd class. Unless you're 40 and over there's not much difference between a 1st and 3rd anyways, I think they even cost the same.

Third class does not last longer than a 2nd class. Both are valid for the same amount of time when we're talking about private pilot privleges. After 12 calendar months a second class medical downgrades to a third calss. Same for the first.

If you're considering a career I'd suggest getting a first class as it will be just as good as a third right now. I'm only required to hold a second class, so I go once a year. However, when I go I get a first class to make sure I can hold that one. After 6 months, it downgrades to a second class.

All correct so far...here is what I would suggest. As said, if you have any aspirations of an aviation job (i.e. commercial certificate or better...), you're going to want to know if you can receive the required medical certificate. However, you're also going to need a Student Pilot Certificate, which just so happens to be on the back of a Third Class medical certificate. So, if you're going for training, I would go to the AME, get a THIRD CLASS medical, but ask him to tell you if you would be able to pass a FIRST CLASS. There are some extra vision requirements for second and first, but other than that, not too much different. The reason you wouldn't want to just GET the second or first is because then you'd need to go to a Designated Pilot Examiner and get a Student Pilot Certificate, for which they would charge you another $25 or so that you could have avoided. Expect $80-90 for the medical. As also posted before, the three classes of medicals usually cost the same because they are so similar, so the doc shouldn't have any problem with this.

Enjoy your training!!

Student pilot certificates can be made with any class of medical, not just third. They shouldn't charge you for student pilot rating and if you make the mistake of not getting one you can go to the FSDO for free.

Yup...I forgot they print the class on it, so yes PilotPip, you're right...you can get any class with a certificate. I didn't know about getting them at the FSDO either...but if the nearest FSDO is a ways away, I know DPEs can give them out too, but they do charge for them most times...
