Shortest Runway That Each Aircraft Operate Off Of

Fri Mar 16, 2007 2:53 am

Hi guys!

The question is pretty straight forward, what is the shortest runway that each aircraft operate off of? Either passenger or cargo service.

Airbus
A318
A319-(SDU?)
A320
A321
A330
A340-(SXM?)

Boeing
727
737-200/3/4/5/6/7/8/9
757
767
777
747- (SXM?)

DeHavilland Dashs (probably the shortest)

Embraers

CRJs.

Also the TriJets,

MD10/11
DC10
L-1011

Does anyone know any of these? Thanks!

With all aircraft it depends primarily on the weight and other factors such as temperature, and for T/O thrust/powewr rating etc. etc. You need to set some standard criteria, for example - for each type at it's max (takeoff or landing) weight, full TOGA power for T/O, Sea Level ISA +15degC conditions, max. braking/spoilers but no reverse for landing.

I understand where you are coming from, but that is not the question I asked. To paraphase, I am wondering what is the shortest runway each of these aircraft have scheduled service to, not what is the shortest amount of runway each aircraft needs to take off. For instance, going into Lukla for a DHC-6 Twin Otter, or going into Santos Dumont (SDU), for an A319 or 737-700. Hope that clears things up. Thanks!

Ok - sorry.
Mis-understood.

Lord Howe Island, New South Wales, Australia - LDH

RWY LENGTH - 886m

QantasLink flies Dash-8-200s (not sure if they still send DH8-100s) from Brisbane once to twice weekly and a few times a day from Sydney to Lord Howe Island. There is no room for error and I have heard due to the short runway, prevalence of severe turbulence and the often changing weather, QantasLink sends only their most experienced pilots to Lord Howe Island.

There's probably airports where DH8s take off on shorter runways, but Lord Howe would have to be up there with airports where DH8s take off on the shortest amount of runway.

Cheers,

I think probably Lukla may be the shortest runway DO228s and DHC-6s work off of. Also, it is at 9000 feet in the air and only 1500 feet long.

Airbus
A318

London City? I heard there were trials and RO and AF are thinking to use it there...

You are correct. However, I am not sure whether or not AF is flying the A318s in there. My guess is no. For the 737s, maybe DUT? That is quite an approach.

AA A300s flew into STT when it was still (officially) 5350 ft.

UA flew DC-10s out of Kona when it was 6500 ft.

Anybody fly 777s into a shorter runway than OGG's 7000 ft?

L1011 standard body airplane, RB.211-22B engines.

The shortest runway I personally have operated this airplane from was 6,500 feet.
TOW, 362,000 pounds, temp 20 degrees, flap 18 degrees.

L1011 standard body airplane, engines RB.211-524B02
The same 6500 foot runway, flap 18 degrees, TOW 391,000 pounds.

L1011-500 airplane, RB.211-524B402 engines.
Same 6500 foot runway, flap 22 degrees, TOW 410,000 pounds.

At the other end of the spectrum, airport JNB, L1011-500 airplane, RB.211-524B402 engines.
MTOW 492,000 pounds, flap 4 degrees.
Runway required, 13,450 feet.

For the 732s, it is probably Dutch Harbor/Unalaska (DUT, PADU). For the B735, 73G, and B738, I am nearly positive it is SDU. That is quite the approach and landing. For the A340, I am guessing SXM, because the A340 doesn't really light the world on fire with its power and climb performance. For the 777/767, WLG? I have seen pictures of them operating in and out of there, and that runway is 6300 feet.

Certainly a lot of guessing here, Thepilot, and not too many actual facts, with figures to back it up.

Except one post...where actual weights, runway lengths etc were presented, using performance data provided by runway analysis charts or AFM performance information.

Of course it is guessing, I don't pretend to know every destination served by a certain aircraft type. To reiterate, I am NOT, I repeat, NOT asking what is the shortest length that an aircraft can take off in, I am asking what airport THAT THEY SERVE has the shortest runway. I do have many performance charts for these aircraft. That is why I keep mentioning airport names. I am sorry if i was not clear in the original post.
