The Ultimite What Plane Is This Quiz

Sun May 20, 2007 5:17 am

Ok, lets see who is the best at Id-ing planes. Who can tell me what aircraft are shown in this photo?

I have seen you guys id planes in similar threads so I bet it only takes about 1 hour for someone to come up with the names of all the planes listed. Bonus points to anyone who can id the actual registration or past owner of any of the planes shown.

*** This is just for fun. I will not be using any information provided for any purpose other then wasting time on A-net.  ***

No way -- Fokker F-27 was a high-wing turboprop, this is a low-wing piston. I agree with Sinlock that it's a Martin 4-0-4, although the shadow around the nose made the shape look wrong until I cranked the picture up to full screen.

No one has ID'd 9, which appears to be a Viscount (and in fact Viscount is mentioned in the photo caption).

Also no on has ID'd 49, is that Vought F7U Cutlass by any chance? Hard to see over there in the corner.

Well, to correct and fill in, it looks like to me that:

2 - Grumman/GM TBF/TBM Avenger
3 - C-119 Flying Box Car
6 - Douglas Thor IRBM
12 - Budd C-93 Conestoga (outer wings are missing)
20 - Grumman F7F Tigercat
21 - North American T-6 Texan
25 - Douglas C-118 (military DC-6) painted to look like a VC-118?
Behind 39 & 40 Republic F-84F Thunderstreak and RF-84F Thunderflash (respectively)
49 - McDonnell F3H Demon
52 - Grumman F9F Cougar
54 - Grumman F9F Cougar Dual Seat Trainer ( don't recall the exact designation)

Otherwise, I pretty much agree, but don't ask me about the helicopters, never did like them.

I vote for 11 as an N-23 and 46 as an F-102.

As for 21, it only has a two bladed prop. The SBD had a three blader.

2 - TBF
3 - whatever it is it isn't a P-38!
5 - SH2
15 May be a Beech 18, certainly not a P2V.
17 maybe an Electra Junior, the Bobcat had a single fin.
18 Lockheed L-10 Electra
20 F7F (Navy markings a bit of a giveaway)
25 DC-6/C-118
26 - the helicopter by the Jetstar (26.5) is an Sikorsky H-34 (aka S-58)
28 & 29 Sikorsky H-5
30 an H-19 is a military S-55, so H-19 probably correct.
31 Piasecki H-21
32 Sikorsky H-37 Mojave
33 Sikorsky HH-3F (USCG)
48 F-100 Super Sabre
49 looks a bit more like a Demon than it does a Cutlass
46 the fin shape and area rule bulge makes this an F-102
52 F9F Cougar
53 F9F Panther
54 I'd guess an F9F-8T (2 seat Cougar Trainer)
57 FJ-3 or FJ-4 Fury
58 probably an F-84G Thunderjet
59 F-94
60 surely a T-33, not an F-80/P80

That's the military version of the DC-6B (or DC-6A if it has a large cargo door). USAF referred to it as C-118A and the US Navy as the R6D. It's definitely not a C-54 and it wouldn't be a DC-7 as the US military never operated the DC-7.

It is indeed an F-102, the easiest way to tell though is by the vertical tail fin coming to a sharp point, whereas on the F-106 the tail has a flat top with some chord to it.

Hi everyone,

well, I have discovered the "Cheat Sheet" for this particular exam:

There will be some pleasant and unpleasant suprises for all of us  yes

Unfortunately, I'm at work, so I can't take the time needed for a really detailed response, but yes, indeed there are some suprises  Wink

Have fun getting to the bottom of this. I don't think I did so well on this one myself, I'm guessing my responses are around 60% correct  Sad

Quoting OldAeroGuy (Reply 17):
2 - Grumman/GM TBF/TBM Avenger

Quoting FlightShadow (Reply 19):
+2 - TBF Avenger (2 votes)

Quoting Jetlagged (Reply 23):
2 - TBF

If it is, it's been modified an awful lot:
Big version: Width: 616 Height: 229 File size: 34kb

Look behind the B-36. That's Race 21 (which I googled, and couldn't find), as well as being #2 in the photo. I don't think it's a P-47, either (my original vote)  Wink

Quoting KELPkid (Reply 13):
22 - North American RCAF Harvard

Quoting FlightShadow (Reply 19):
22 - T-6/SNJ / North American RCAF Harvard

We were all wrong on this one  mischievous , in a manner that's truly worthy of one of 2H4's identification threads.

Get a load of this:

Big version: Width: 616 Height: 323 File size: 35kb

I had no idea that a BT-14/Yale (basically, a fixed-geared AT-6) even existed  Sad
