A320-which Engine Choice Is More Popular?

Thu May 24, 2007 12:46 pm

Slow night, so I thought I would liven things up with a little tech ops style civil discussion.

Which engine choice is more popular amongst A32X-series operators, CFM or IAE?

In the US, it seems the IAE V2500 is the choice amongst operators who need good "hot 'n high" performance, like UA at DEN or HP at many airports out west...

Second question: which has the lowest SFC at typical cruising altitudes (i.e. which engine choice will get an A320 operator the longest cruise?).

In Canada I would say CFM came out ahead, as both Canadi>n and Air Canada went with them for their A320 fleets, which make up the majority of the A32Xs in Canada...

In Germany, it would be CFM, hands down. LT, LH, DE, 4U and AB operate the CFM56, even though LH does operate IAE powered A321s, AB has a handful of IAE powered ex DH A319s, and 4U has been receiving brandnew IAE powered A319s recently.

Regarding HP, you have to take into account that since the merger, the combined HP-US operates a mixed fleet of CFM56 and IAE powered A32xs, and the word is that this may change and US may get rid of one of them.

Out here.Till a few years ago it was the V2500 series as IC had the A320s.With the Enterance of Pvt operators,Initially the order continued for the V2500s,But recently it seems that IC has gone in for the CFM56Bs [Due to a mgmt problem with IAE] & the newer operators have selected CFM56Bs.

I believe that's the IAE. That's why airlines like B6 went with the IAE, it has slightly longer range due to lower SFC for the transcons.

Got this in an Email. Not sure how accurate though.

IAE V2500
- More Fuel Efficient and hence has more range
- Queiter
- Sturdy
- Better Hot-and-High performance
- More suited for longer low cycle flying

CFM56B
- Lighter
- Easier to Maintain
- More suited for shorter high cycle flying

Okay, well, we've got a pretty good breakdown by region...does anyone have the actual statistics of how many IAE A32X's have gone out the door at Tolouse and Finkenwerder vs. CFM's?  Wink

I thought IC went for the CFM56 because of the huge backlog for IAE V2500s.

That was one reason in addition to the dispute regarding payment & overhaul issues between the two companies. When 50% of your Fleet is AOG because of Powerplants pending Overhaul. Its serious.

MEL,
That would be about right. Although I was told the -5B's extra compressor stage was to make the cruise a little bit better than the -5As. Again, the hearsay rule of thumb, if your average hours per cycle is >1.5hrs, go for IAE, if less than 1.25, go for CFM... 1.25 - 1.5 it's pretty even... not sure if those numbers are right... but it goes along with the "general perception"...

The right engine choice can make a difference between the A32X being plasticfantastic or a total nightmare!

OK, I see now. Thanks for clarifying.
