Crew Accountability

I was running a little late for school this morning when i thought:

If a pilot oleaves his house on time for a 8am departure and runs into a traffic jam, road bloack, or any other case that he doesnt have to do with, what happens if he is late? would he call crew scheduling on the way there and they would hold the flight? or would he be repremanded by the chief pilot of the base? obviously if it is induced by himself like oversleeping, its his fault. but what about all the things that could happen on the way to the airport?

A pilot on standby duty would normally be called, so as not to delay the flight.

We had this one our base a few times, e.g. a pilot's or F/A's car would break down on the way to work or they got involved in an accident. They would call crew control and crew control would get a standby pilot or F/A. We also always have one F/A on airport standby, this means sitting from before the first departure in the morning until the last crewchange at noon time in the airport (usually helping a bit with office work), ready to go on any flight within minutes, where there is a F/A missing. Those F/As and pilots on home standby have to be able to reach the airport within one hour after being called.

On one of the airlines here, there are no airport reserves (ie: airport standby), just 1hr30 stanby... the airline provides car transports for the crew. Each crew member is given a 1 hr prior to departure reporting, and each crew member is given a journey time target based on where they live (I live in the 1hr zone)... (min 30 mins, max 1.5hrs).

If the pickup vehicle arrives, the crew has to respond to the vehicle's presence within 15 mins if the car arrives anytime earlier than 30 mins before the specified pick up time. If the crewmember does not, the driver will call Crew Transport of the lack of response and Transport will call the crewmember directly and/or make a report. This is done so if the car needs to pick up more than 1 crewmember, it can do so in the specified time, and if early pick up is needed, the driver can get crew transport to notify the crewmember directly.

If the pickup is more than 15 mins late, the crewmember has to call crew transport or crew ops to notify of the delay.

This system is extremely useful in Jakarta's unpredictable traffic (and car/bus is the only way to reach the airport). My wife had several cases where the car didn't arrive until 30 mins before reporting time, at that time, crew ops had to make a judgement call... delay the flight, call a nearer standby, wait for the transport, or tell her to pick a cab instead. Other cases were they were caught in a traffic jam that was so horrendous that they called crew ops as soon as they determined they couldn't make the report in time or even the flight... but written reports had to be submitted. Therefore crew delays are made accountable.

Cellphones are made mandatory to be switched on 1hr prior to pickup, or from 4am to 5pm on a standby day... If your phone's off during those times, they'll count you as "sleeping" or "out of position" and get a nice appointment with your respective chief.

The Standby Crew has the worst situation.Ask majority of the crew.They prefer a rostered flight rather than Standby position.

Home Standby's OK... Airport Standby/Reserve is the worst! Especially in CGK's traffic... Reserve 1 is OK... wake up damn early, get to the airport before rush hour, get back lunchtime or before the afternoon rush hour... Reserve 2 is a nightmare...spend up to 2 hours going to the airport, wait for a couple of hours, get back home (another 2 friggin' hours) in the afternoon / early evening rush hour....

The next worse roster on that particular airline is the 1650 CGK-PNK-CGK... especially on fridays, U can spend 2 hrs going to the airport, for 1hr report-in, fly 3 hrs + 1/2 turnaround, finish 1/2 hr after landing, and then spend up to 4hrs going home...

We have our own Inflight lounges at al base cities. When we are sitting airport standby we have a bigscreen tv, DVD player, computers, etc. You still get bored though; at WN we sit for 5 hrs and if we don't get an assignment we are free from duty for 12 hrs. We are only required to sit airport standby when on 24hr reserve (Ready Reserve) and we can only sit it 5 times per month.

Nothing with us. They sit in full uniform in the crew briefing room, if necessary help the base supervisor ( chief F/A at the base) with paperwork, go and have a coffee in the terminal or chat with the ops staff and/ or the engineers  Wink (the crew briefing room is inbetween the OPS and engineering offices, some of my colleagues have F/A girlfriends).

I have to say that relations between flight crews, engineers and OPS staff are very close at our station. We often meet off duty as well and there are often parties where everybody working in aviation is invited. We are all on first name terms and often meet in a local pub after duty.

at TK we have standby posts for F/As, however for us cockpit crew there is no such thing, if a pilot gets sick, or stuck, they click this lil proximity button and whoever lives the closest to the airport that is able to fly with that captian, as far as cat II, 737-400/800 and experience status, gets called up, i get called a lot i live 3 miles from the airport....hurray lol, sometimes they call you for a red eye about 8 hours of flying to north russia and u havent slept all day so it's tough, you dont have to accept the flight of course...

anyways, ive never been late but i hope i dont because i dont want to know what happens if anything when they mark u down for a report...

In GA, they got a nice place at GA Ops Center... you can sleep there if you want! LOL J/K
2 that I know have the FLightOps Desk, several work tables for crew needing to catch up with paperwork, notice board (with some nice lists of pax to avoid if encountered on board... LOL), endless supplies of coffee, tea, and instant noodles... and a small TV everyone fights over! Some have a quiet area for "rest between flights / long aircraft change" for the crew... the smoking room is always a popular place.

Entertainment for most of them will be calling their girlfriends/boyfriends to go to the airport and have a chat somewhere.

Over here, they've opposed the use of that "proximity button"... the last thing a crew member wants if a sick crew gets sick on early evening and the Ops hit the proximity button and picked someone who's been off for 8hrs, call them up and give them Min Rest allowance... I know several crew who has been avoiding living close to the airport for that risk.

Nice to see that.At our Airline unfortunately theres no F/As only Cargo  Smile However the Relationship between Mx & Flt ops is excellent & on 1st name basis.

That depends from airline to airline. Some airline do not allow crew in uniform to hang around "inappropriately" in public places... Some do... Most of the time it's somewhere between the crew room and the public area... something like... the corridors...

Hot room is not soo bad. Depending on where you are based of course. One of my ex girlfreinds was a US werst F/A and from what I know PHX hot rooms are not soo bad. CLT is okay too as is LGA.
There is plenty of room for Gods animals, right next to the mashed potatoes!
