Wing Flex - How Much From Ground Position?

Tue Jun 12, 2007 7:18 am

I was just wondering if any of you could give me figures as to how much (in feet, meters) does a wing typically flex upward on:

777
A340
747
A330
A380

????

I haven't been able to find anything about it, but I know that these larger widebody airliners with longer wings flex upward quite a bit during flight.

Thanks,

Edit:

Was wondering what the measurements were from the tip of the wing.

Don't know about the airplanes you asked about, but the B707 had a total wing flex at the tip of twenty feet (10 up, 10 down) before permanent deformation was noticed.

Looking back further in time, the DC-6B had a wing flex of 12 feet, 6 up/down.

B-52 bomber's had a 18-foot wingtip rise. I heard, though I'd like others to confirm, that either the 777 had a 6-meter tip rise or the A380 had a 7-meter tip rise.

I think you might be thinking of MAX wing loading tests.

I'm just wondering what it is typically during normal flight, not to the point of breaking, or being damaged.

For the Airbus A380, I was sort of disappointed in the flexing of its wings. I thought those huge things would flex way up, but alas, not the case.

I do believe the 777 can flex 7 meters upwards before snapping.

In normal operation you would probably see a meter or so. Guesstimatin.

The 380 wings flex quite a bit. When it takes off, the wingtips probably rise 2-3 meters at least from the "full of fuel standing still" position.
