Long Boarding Time

Sat Aug 04, 2007 10:44 am

Why is it in the USA, we have such a long boarding time?

I recently took 4 SAS domestic flights. Boarding opened up 25 mins before departure and closed 10 mins before departure.

After the gate agent, there was no long line in the jetway. You went through the gate, the jetway, onto the aircraft, stored your carry-on and sat down. No fuss, no delay. I was thinking, why would it ever take longer than 15 mins to board a 737-800? Why is it different in the USA?

Oslo Norway is a very decent sized airport. Comparable to a lot of USA secondary cities.

Any ideas?

- The US carriers typically have a much bigger on board baggage allowance than Eurocarriers. Takes a while to stow everything+kitchen sink in the overheads.
- First class boards first and takes a while to settle. For speed of TOTAL boarding they should board last.

Years ago the SAS policy was to have the safety briefing before doors closed. The idea was that a passenger does not know how to get out of the aircraft in case of emergency at the gate, except thru the boarding door.
This might explain why they want all pax on board std minus 5 or 10min.
