ERJ-170/190 And Cargo

Wed Aug 15, 2007 1:04 pm

Hey folks
Just been thinking that most Commuter aircraft from Dash 8s to CRJs andd ERJs 140s dont seem to have much space for carrying cargo in their underbellys.
I only ask this as I think a lot of small carib countries could use perhaps smaller, more efficient aircraft on some of their routes and know that a lot of carib people carry a lot of suitcases so the need for large cargo space is always good for these routes.
Do the ERJ 170/5s and 190/5s have good cargo capacity for that size of aircraft??

I'll just mention what I know about Air Canada, who orderd the 175/190 for themselves and the CRJ9 (actually the 705 series, but said change in nomenclature does not affect cargo space) for Jazz. The CRJ7 and CRJ9, and soon to be the CRJ1000 are the only Bombardier's that can really be compared to those bigger Embraers. I know for a fact that the Embraer 175 has the CRJ9 whipped for cargo space, but I think the latter costs less to operate and has better range. That would then help answer the question of AC delegating the Embraer's to mainline and the Bombardier's to Jazz.

No... they are set up to carry the passengers luggage and that is about it.

At AC I have found we use both the forward and aft hold on YYZ-YHZ flights with the 190, full with pax luggage. However on lighter transboarder flights we rarely use the aft hold. Much has to do with where they are flying it. With a full flight you can expect little or no room for cargo.
