Runway 6R/24L At CLE

Thu Aug 23, 2007 7:04 am

What's going on with that trunway at CLE? When I took off from 6L, it looked like it was being repaved but only small segments every 30 feet or so. And I think that 6C/24C is in use as well. I guess they moved that big X from the runway. (That's really bright when it's active! Is it stuck to the ground somehow when it's there?)

Runway 6R-24L is not being repaved. Its intersection with runway 10-28 is being eliminated, and an extension is being constructed currently. When complete, the runway will actually "slide down" from the intersection with 10-28, and thus that portion eliminated will be "re-added" to the southern end, or the approach end of 6R (as stated, currently under construction.) The holes you see are where Kokosing, Inc. is removing slabs of concrete, whole, from the runway, where the new touchdown zone lighting will be located. Unlike Allega, which crushed slabs on spot and hauled them away with a dump truck, Kokosing's philosophy is different. It is more expensive, but more efficient to haul away entire slabs of concrete on semi-trucks off site to be broken up.

6C-24C is open now, but it will cease to be a runway after November of this year.

There was lots of talk that it would be decommissioned at some point. What will actually happen to the surface of the runway then?

Is 10/28 ever used? I've been on it but only as a taxiway. It would be cool to use 6C/24C one more time, but unforunately I used 6L both in and out last time.

I would imagine it would become a parallel taxiway.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

What is the operating configuration at CLE now with 6R/24L closed and the center runway open? Landings on C and 10/28, takeoffs on 6L/24R?? Or are they just sticking all the props on C for takeoffs?

checkmark  6C-24C will become Taxiway C. Also, I believe that Taxiway W is going to be rebuilt, and the pavement of the then-former 62-24C from the current Taxiway W to the intersection of 10-28 will be demolished.

Runway 10-28 is used, but usually in crosswinds. It seems as if landing on 10 is the most common operation, otherwise, I usually don't see other operations that often (but they do happen).

I am not totally sure, but from my observations, when in operation on the "6s," it seems as if non-heavy takeoffs are done on 6C, and landings are done on 6L. On the "24s," I believe that non-heavy landings are done on 24C, and takeoffs are done on 24R. Occasionally, you will see landings done on 10. And with 6C-24C closed, I have noticed a few 28 takeoffs. Again, I emphasize that I don't know for sure (could always bug CLE Tower if I needed to  wink  ), this is just from my observations.

When 6R/24L is completed it will be almost 10000 usable feet with 1000 feet xxx-ed out at the northeasterly end.

Assuming maintenance continues, would the FAA allow occasional use of that 1000 feet of former runway if a widebody at MTOW needed 11,000ft?

Probably not. When 6L-24R opened a few years ago, the runway (apporach end of 24R) intersected and went well beyond runway 10-28. After the decoupling project for that runway, the portion just before and all of it after the 10-28 intersection was used to relocate the approach lighting system (ALS)...therefore, it is unusable. If the approach lighting for 24L is relocated to the (former) runway pavement as well, then I doubt it will be open.
