Vibration And Sound On 777

Fri Aug 31, 2007 7:23 am

I've been in row 13 (last row window) on American's 777 several times. I like that corner of the business class cabin, because on night flights it seems the quietest and easiest for sleep. What I notice, though, is a periodic low sound accompanied by a very slight vibration from somewhere in the aircraft. It appears to go on and off about every thirty seconds. It is not toilets being flushed. This row is over the wing on these planes.

What might that be? Would it be fuel pumps?

Probably not.

As HAWK21M says, it may be flight controls. The 777 has notoriously loud hydraulics if you sit in the wing area. You may have noticed that during landing there is also a loud sustained grinding.

Yes, grinding is what it sounds like.

Thank you. I knew it was no doubt nothing to worry about. It's just very noticable when having an ear against the seat head cushion.
