Runway Repaint

Tue Oct 02, 2007 12:00 pm

How often do airports repave their runways? also, at an airport like LAS, will they ever repave the taxiways that have been sun burnt? how likely is it?

As someone who has worked at a desert airport, in the summer nonetheless, I would love to know how a taxiway could possibly get "sun burnt?" White lineboys who work on it and don't wear sun protection are known to get a bit red, however  cool   sun

Also, a bit of advice, don't spill Jet-A on fresh asphalt (like, repaved within the past month) when it's 115 deg. F out. The doolies in the Jet-A truck are known to sink into the pavement under such circumstances  shhh

I believe he is using some rather unique word choice to refer to the painted lines on airport surfaces getting worn out by the sun/planes constantly rolling over them.

what i meant was the cracks in the pavement (how often are they "filled" in) and how often an airport would repaint their white (and every other color) lines and the such..

Depends on the airport, however from what I've seen, taxiway cracks are filled similarly to how they're done on the highway, just use tar...it was the county road crew that did the job at the GA field I worked at  Smile As for painting, well that was usually done by hand (as opposed to how the highway dept. handles the job...).

How often runway/taxiway markings get repainted depend largely on the environment in which the airport is located and the financial resources the airport has at-hand.

Up here in the snow belt, many airports paint their markings every year or two years due to the wear and tear over the winter of plow blades scraping the paint when removing snow.
