Successful Water Landings

Sat Oct 27, 2007 1:24 am

How many successful water-landings of modern commercial aircraft have taken place. I know that the Ethiopian 767 led to some very unfortunate losses, but my understanding is that had the hijackers not pounced on the pilot while he was landing the plane, more people's lives would have been spared.

Any other water-landings with a more successful outcome to report?

Here's a small list of examples where passengers survived:

There are many threads on this subject if you do a search. Here's one from the Civil Aviation forum: Landing On Water - Successful Attempts? (by Geoffm Oct 27 2004 in Civil Aviation)

There was another with quite a few replies just 2 or 3 weeks ago but don't have time to search for it now.

Aren't they technically ditchings as opposed to landings?

Quoting 9VSIO (Reply 3):

That would be a more appropriate term. Unless a pilot thinks they are in float plane and actually try to land normally.
