We are a rather new DC10 operator and wanted to ask any FedEx employees or other DC10 operator personnel on this forum what their experience has been with this area.
For those not familiar, the DC10 is subject to FAA AD 88-03-08 which mandates periodic ultrasonic inspections of the horizontal stabilizer integrally stiffened skin panel planks at the operating bulkhead attachments for stress corrosion cracks. If cracks are found and within flyable limits, they must be reinspected every 3 months. The terminating action is replacement of the skin panel which is a several thousand man-hour job.
My main questions of interest are:
* How many have experienced replacing one or more of these panels?
* Have any of your aircraft been grounded during a periodic inspection because the extent of existing and newly found cracks fell outside of flyable limits?
My desire is to judge our risk exposure to this to determine if we should pro-actively replace skin panels.
Thank you in advance if anyone has any input.
