CRJ/ERJ Windscreen Noise

Sun Dec 23, 2007 8:07 pm

I have heard this several times that the CRJ cockpit is much more quiet the ERJ (CRJ200/700, ERJ135/145 not E-jets). This came from an ASA captain. I too have noticed that the ERJ guys are always wearing David Clarks or some other large headsets for this exact reason supposedly. Yep, I've seen the CRJ pilots wearing the little Telex head phones.

Second, why is the 135/145 APU so loud! I HATED working around those things. I always tried to avoid the north end of D concourse for this same reason. You could hear the thing from halfway down D and when you drive behind it, it was this high screeching noise; almost deafening.

For the ERJ a lot depends on the APU Exhaust Mod installed. Older APU's are much louder then the newer models. You may have also had one with a curled impeller blade. Those will just scream loud........!!

The ERJ-135/145 nose end and cockpit area is very similar to the EMB-120 externally. At the higher speeds that the ERJ's fly at cockpit noise due to wind/airflow is quite noticable I'm led to believe. Though I stand to be corrected...

Also depends on the CRJ. Some of the older ones have a different wiper on them. This creates alot more noise. The newer ones are quieter but still not very good. The 700/900 are quiet enough you don't really need headsets.

The nose is exactly the same on the 135/145 as it is on the 120. You have a turboprop nose going a lot faster. The wipers create a ton of noise.

Yes, the sound of an APU change. I once stood at our hangar and listen to a APU of one of our planes scream, while it was at the gate. The gate was 1/2 mile away.

Not being there... but I'd say it had a curled blade. Those will just scream......

NEW

Some older planes have been modified, but the cost is pretty high

The APU's crap out on the 145s so often that the mod has been done to most of our airplanes.

The ERJ cockpit is really loud. That's exactly why you may see ERJ pilots wearing David Clark's! Some of the guys have their own headsets but many of them wear earplugs with these headsets. I just stick to the DC's so I don't go deaf in a few months!
