Aircraft Parking At Tbit

TOM BRADLEY INTL TERM GATES: ALL ARR WIDEBODY ACFT SHUT DOWN ENGINES ON TWY ADJACENT TO GATE AND TOW ONTO GATE.

What is the reason for all wide bodies at TBIT to be towed to the gate?

My guess is that there isn't enough room between concourses for the heavies to turn into gates without blowing the ramp on the other concourse across the alleyway, well away. Detroit Metro had this same rule when NW operated out of the C concourse over at the Smith terminal. If you were parking at the end B gates, you had to shut down prior to docking at the gate for the jetblast for a sharp turn into like B10 (for those familiar with metro).

Looks like Span clearence issues or close proximity to ground equipment at that gate.
Hence as a precaution better to tow in than taxi.

Have you ever arrived into TBIT on a 747 or other large WB? It is a very tight fit!! and also there are the jetwash issues/

Tow in is required for two reasons -- wingspan clearance -- lots of 747-400s on gates, and jet blast mitigation to adjacent terminal 3 and 4 which use common alley with TBIT -- over the years AA, Alaska etc have had their share of dinged up planes having ground service equipment of containers pushed into them.

I only arrived at TBIT once, and to be honest, I was so wiped out and jetlagged, I barely recall it.

Don't blame ya, been there as well. Seeing me in an A343 taxiing out as a B773ER taxi in, it gets VERY tight.
