Why Is It So Hard To Get Plates?

Wed Feb 13, 2008 11:35 am

I'm looking for aerodrome plates. Aerad is usually good for touring round the UK. They cover all the bases (aerodrome, taxi, minima, approaches, departures and arrivals) and they come in useable form: portrait A5, perfect for my kneeboard. But to coin a phrase, I don't need the whole goddamn bible. There's no point in shelling out £100+ on the complete Aerad manual when I'm only going to use a small fraction of it before the plates go out of date.

What I want is to be able to get individual plates as I need them.

This place does approach plates but not the rest, and it is the rest that is actually more important to me.

The AIP has all the charts I need but they often aren't very useable for the cockpit. They are naturally A4 and often don't scale well went shrunk down. Some are also landscape. Only with some convoluted jiggery-pokery was I able to get them into useable form for printing.

Is there an easier way to get good plates?

Jepp used to offer regional subscriptions but that might have been only in the U.S. LIDO may offer something similiar but I don't know. If you're just looking for an airport here and there I wouldn't count on it.

Well it took a lot of my patented cut 'n' paste methodology, but I managed to get nice A5 okay quality charts out of the AIP files. They look kind of cool too, except for the ground movement plate where the printer cut off about 5 pixels from the left edge (but I can't be arsed with redoing it for that).

Same here, although it must be noted that the AIP does not cover all ADs.

I believe it covers all those with a CAA Public Aerodrome license, so private airfields are not included.
