Help Needed ID'ing Photo

Mon Mar 10, 2008 3:48 am

I was browsing through Windows maps and I saw this plane at PMD. Any guesses?

Looks to be the McDonnell-Douglas YC-15.

Correct, you can even read the -15 on the vertical in the second photo. Its parked at Site 1 the Space Shuttle assembly site, now occupied by Boeing. Does anyone know when the photos were taken?

Here's a bit of interesting information.
I'd always thought the planes were taken to DM and scrapped. Last I saw the YC-14 it was sitting across from the base Hospital.

According to "International Air Power Review" Volume 23 Page 54 the YC-15 experienced an engine failure during the flight tests for the C-17 program described in http://www.theaviationzone.com/factsheets/amst.asp and is now in storage at Air Force Plant 42 (PMD).

My grandparents live in Lancaster so I've seen it before, but I have never made that connection... I thought the YC-15 only made it on paper and lost to the C-17 early on...

The YC-15 was 25 years before the C-17......years later McD took a lot from what they learned and used it on the C-17.

Actually there were two built 72-1876 which was placed in storage at AMARC (bone yard) in 1979. It spent some time on celebrity row. Not sure if it is still on celebrity row yet though. The other one 72-1875 went back to McDonnell Douglas in 1997.
