Loading Cans On Narrow Bodied Aircraft

Thu Mar 27, 2008 3:10 pm

Good afternoon,

I was just perusing some old B 720 aircraft namely Western Airlines from the 1970s and noticed the B720s used loadings cans customarily used for widebodies instead of loading individual bags. The loading elevator appeared rather unique as well perhaps given the shorter undercarriage. I know AC's A320s use cans and utilise the standard loading elevators but other than AC's A320/21s etc what other airline's narrow bodies aircraft use cargo cans and loading elevators.

Thanks,

Well, the cans that WA used, LDW's, were much smaller than an LD-3....perhaps 1/3 of the size. If I'm not mistaken, the 757 was originally supposed to have been a containerized a/c but the airlines didn't want it that way.
