IT Systems In Airlines

Tue Apr 01, 2008 10:02 am

Hey Guys,

I am doing a uni project looking at IT systems being used by some airlines. Specifically, I am interested in comparing the systems of QF, BA, NZ and Air Asia. I am interested in knowing what reservation systems they use, and what internal IT systems they use such as SAP etc etc.

Any help would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

For Reservations/Operations:

QF and BA use Amadeus - http://www.amadeus.com

Air Asia uses Navitaire - http://www.navitaire.com

As for Air New Zealand.. I'm pretty sure they still use Corina but beyond that I'm not sure who hosts it.

BA Res+Inv = Amadeus, DCS = RTZ (to migrate to Amadeus in a few years)
QF Res+Inv = Amadeus, DCS = QUBE (migration to Amadeus starts this month)

Air Asia = Navitaire

NZ = Carina (a very very old copy of BA RTZ, running under ALCS).

Re internal system, for BA and QF there are tons. BA had nearly 100 systems that had to be interfaced with Amadeus when the migrated the Reservations system, and a whole lot more when the migrated to Inventory.

In addition to Res, Inventory and DCS, typical IT applications that most large carriers will have include

- Revenue Management
- Revenue Accounting
- Pro-rating and Interline Billing
- Cargo Automation
- Cargo Revenue Accounting
- Flight Operations
- Crew Planning
- Fuel Planning
- Fares Publication
- Supply and Logistics
- Catering
- Loyalty / CRM
- Data Warehouse
- E-retail
- Schedule Planning
- Disruption Management
- Engineering and Aircraft Planning
- Financial Accounting and General Ledger
- Human Resources
- Staff Travel
- Revenue Integrity / Flight Firming

Hah ! I know everything that is worth knowing. By definition therefore, anything I might perhaps choose not to know, is not worth knowing  snooty

Until it turns around and bites you on the bum! Which in your case is, of course, an easy target Big grin

Not true. If it turns out I don't know something that is in fact worth knowing, I will by the act of discovering that I don't know it, know it after all and so in fact cancel out the fact that I didn't know the fact in question. And by the fact of my knowing the fact, the fact becomes worth knowing, in fact. All very simple really.

This is true - which is why at 1A we're moving completely off mainframeosauruses and moving to server farms which can be switched in and switched out with 0 outage, and are much cheaper. IBM said it couldn't be done, but nonetheless it has been, and it works - they're rated up to 20,000 transactions per second, I believe.
