A321 Emergency Exit Noise

Fri Apr 04, 2008 12:08 pm

Collective a.net hive-mind, answer this one for me. I flew LHR-AMS yesterday on a BA A321 and I snagged myself the exit row window seat. Acres of legroom of course but from the moment we took off the emergency exit was making rather disconcerting noises. I would describe it was sounding like someone crushing a big plastic soda bottle. It was quiet at times and other times I could feel it right the way through the floorboards. I asked the FA and she said "oh it does that all the time, it's just the plastic." Not a very technical answer, but at least she tried. Now I fly a LOT, particularly on 320s and 319s - admittedly this is my first 321 trip in many years - and I've never heard anything like this.

Please to explain?

It happens on all doors on the airbus. The creaking and popping sounds are more noticeable during take off and landing, turbulence, and pressurization stages as the locking pins inside the door frame pull or rub against each other. A bad seal would cause a steady whistling sound or hum which would have to be constant and "carry a tune"...

Yes, it is just a quirk of Airbus doors! All main doors on A319/20/21 do it, also when i was at VS the A340 doors did it too.

Wonder if A380 doors do it?

Did it sound like a loud ratchety rattle or pebbles? It could have been ice in the vents. There could be one running near the exit and when that happens it can be alarming.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!

That's when you start saying things like "does that sound like a bad seal to you? Ah well, get ready in case the masks drop." Then you calmly go back to reading your book.

If it was a hissing sound.....A leaking seal. The crackling sound would be the Decorative panel flexing.

I work as a FA on the airbus'. All the doors of the 319/320/321 pop and snap like that during the takeoff and landing as the cabin is being pressurized. This happens on every flight. It its not so noticable to pax on the 319/320 because pax don't typically sit next to the doors on those types. On the 321 pax sit next to doors 2 and 3.

I have worked to A330 a few times and never noticed this on that aircraft type.

I know it's not a safety issue but doesn't this seem like, y'know, a design flaw?

No. It's just noise. The cost to fix the noise is not justified.

The Flexing of the Decorative panels with age....Cannot be termed a design flaw.

Ahh, I didn't know it was an age thing. Thanks.

Hello

When working for Caledonian Airways I noticed this noise on the exits during taxi etc. I was worried the first time I heard it but as I heard it on a lot of flights I just took it as ‘normal operations’.

The aircraft I work on now have their own unique noises as well, some of them catch even us out!

Kimberly.
