30 Hour TAF

Tue May 13, 2008 3:57 am

I just read the NWS is changing the format of TAF's in the US to conform more with international standards and the new TAF will be valid for 30 hours.
What do you all think of this?

It doesn't look like a major change in how it is read. Different date/time format throughout. I'm sure like many things though it will have a rocky start with the people not expecting this.
Change comes in November.

It's nothing that a skilled pilot and a GFA couldn't tell you!
Contact Winnipeg center now on 134.4, good day.

Not much change there. The only slightly confusing thing is the presence of all the extra dates in places where they weren't before. But nothing you can't get used to.

More mumbo jumbo. Will they actually be able to guess the weather 30 hours ahead correctly is what I am looking forward to seeing.

Here in Canada, Enviornment Canada can't get the first 3 hours correct. The worst that I have seen personally
is 20 TAFS for CYHZ in 24 hours. Case in point here today nothing is going on in the weather and they still can't
get it right :

Officials at Enviornment Canada claim they are more accurate than the NWS. I say ask the Dispatchers that
work Transborder flights and let them decide who is better. My money is on the NWS.

Quoting Jetset (Reply 5):
Here in Canada, Enviornment Canada can't get the first 3 hours correct

Also, they tend to WAY over-do the TAF with things like BKN019, SCT234, etc. And then there are the nested TAFs.

2305 10SM BKN025
TEMPO 2305 1SM OVC001
PROB 30 2305 5SM OVC020

Which, to mean screams that they don't know what the hell they are doing, and basically making an all-around cover-all TAF.
Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.
