Why Doesn't Airbus Put Winglets On The A306?

Sun May 25, 2008 1:50 am

Looking at some of American's A306's, I was wondering why Airbus, or perhaps A306 carriers haven't put winglets on their birds. Now, yes they do have the very small type winglets, but nothing bigger.

because those smaller winglets are probably some how more suited to the A306 and the larger winglets may not do so much more, maybe someone else can expand on this point

Maybe its because of the times of such designs. If I remembered the 747-400 was the first commercial aircraft to use winglets instead of the wingfences the A300/A310/A320family uses. At this time really it makes little sence to place them as the fleet is already being replace by newer technology aircrafts and the small number of a/c flying.

The brand new A380 has wingtip fences.

It reallllly depends on the wing.

True maybe its because of the design of the wings, I forgot that the A380 was wing fences. Aerodynamic technology will dictate whether or not such requirements is necessary. Do wing fences do the same in reducing drag as the winglets anyone?

Bingo. It's not at all clear that the A306 wing has enough margin to support a winglet.

Not really...a winglet is never necessary. It may be advantageous, it may not. Aerodynamics will tell you how much you'll gain, but structures needs to get involved to tell you how much you'll lose.

Fences are not as effective, though the drag reduction mechanism is essentially the same.

Maybe aerodynamically the Winglets if fitted would not have made a significant difference considering the cost & age of the Airframe these days.

As Tdscanuck hints at aerodynamics isn't everything. It's no use slapping winglets on if you decrease the fatigue life of the wing too much.

Also, there's the question of cost of development + mounting vs benefit.

Kelly Johnson once said, "You don't need wing fences. You need a new wing."

Wonder what he would have made of winglets?

Hehe. To be fair Kelly Johnson seemed to be more specialized in rather extreme aircraft where things like fuel consumption were secondary considerations.

Wing fences and winglets are there for different reasons. Fences are an aerodynamic fix. Good wings don't need fences, which contribute nothing except drag. I suspect he might have seen a use for winglets.

I thought the A380 was fitted with wingtip fences more because of the wing span (79.8 m) to fit the standard gate area so it does not need a bigger area compared to the biggest classification now (80 m x 80 m).

Indeed. The fences are a way of remaining in the 80x80 box. BTW that's not the biggest classification. The An-225 is bigger. It is a way for the airports to ensure they can handle the size of the aircraft for taxi and parking at gates.

Yessir, I am aware that there is a difference in purpose.

I just liked the mental image of one of KJ's underlings coming to him with a design for a wingleted wing, and him going purple in the face for the .1 of a second that it took him to realise that this wasn't the mother and father of all fences.

'Twas a play on his own words, you see.
