A330/340 Vertical Fin Differences

Sun Jun 01, 2008 3:31 pm

Hi All,

I've been working on highly detailed illustrations of the A330/340 family, and have come across something slightly puzzling. Most A330s and A340s have a much smaller fairing at the base of the vertical fin than a few others. What tipped me off to this was looking at photos of a Singapore A340-313E. The fairing is much larger than other A340s, but not as large as that on the A340-500/600.

I've downloaded a ton of technical information in the documents Airbus has available (station diagrams, etc), but this is not addressed in any of them.

Can anyone intimately familiar with the Airbus family shed any light on it? What fairing goes with which type(s), and what the difference is?

Thanks!

JH

In general shorter and twin engined aircraft need bigger vertical tails.

I understand about moment arms and side area and all that, but this is a structural change at the base of the fin. Early ones had a very small fairing covering the structure there, and later ones have a much larger fairing covering the structure there.

Tks!

Perhaps an aerodynamic improvement which didn't make it into production until later.

AFIK there should be only two types: A small one used on the original models (342, 343 and 333) and a larger one developed for the 332 due to the shorter moment arm, and used on the 345 and 346 also.

Qantas Group has received several new 333/332 recently and some now have a shorter by 500mm Tail. And in the maintenance memo tabling differences was said to be of 345/346 type. (cant remember if 333 or 332). Also some are now FBW Rudder, but only the last 2 delivered IIRC.
