Water On The Runway

Thu Aug 21, 2008 4:11 am

Today at KMLB the runways, and taxiways were flooded and I was wondering if a MD88 were to land on a flooded runway with the water as high as the runway lights would it make the plane skid off the runway? That was the main reason all of our flights cxld today due to the airfield being flooded.

It would hydroplane, and probably loose control. Skidding off the runway would be one of the better outcomes.
Contact Winnipeg center now on 134.4, good day.

Ok thought so I know they are heavy a/c but just not sure how the plane would react.

Out here in Heavy rain.Frequent ground checks are made on the Runway surface & if flooding detected.ATC is informed by the Ground Inspection crew of the Airport.
Who can relay the Runway closure message to Aircraft accordingly.

As the Drainage system around Runways at most Airports are good, chances of flooding are less.Unless there is heavy rain prevailing at that time.

You're talking about very deep water and our ops data only allows up to 1/2" standing water or packed snow. I wouldn't begin to land in 6 or 8" of water.
