Cabn Crew Question SQ

Flight SQ282 leaves AKL at 01:10 for SIN, how do staff prepare their day for this 10:25 flight.
What time do the go to bed and get up ready for flight?
Must have terrible body effects.  Wow!
you don't get a second chance to make a first impression!

Not unusual, IIRC, SQ001 leaves SFO at 01:05 local...I remember nodding off at the gate with my wife while we were waiting for our boarding to begin  Wink

For ultra-long haul flights like this, it isn't uncommon for the departure time to be really early (or really late depending on how you look at things  optimist   pessimist  to optimize the arrival time. SQ001 gets into HKG at 06:30 local and then into SIN around 10:30ish IIRC.

Not much of a problem for the cabin crew at SQ...these folks are hired quite young (very early twenties) and signed on for three or four year contracts, then discarded, like an old shoe.
The pax like to see new young faces, you see.
No grandma's allowed.

I recall years ago when I was flying for SQ, the departure time was at 2am from SFO.
Sleeping in my room at the downtown Hilton, at about 6pm is starts...some broad in the next room is bellowing, to the tune of some piano music.
Good grief.
I telephone her room and complain.
I mentioned, "what the heck are you doing, practising for the Metropolitan Opera?

She says.....'as a matter of fact I am, I go on stage at eight tonight.'

The key word here is 'contract'. They are not forced to join the company and they know when they have to leave (unless the company offers them more contracts). They are not 'discarded'. Moreover, IIRC, one of the ex-Singapore Girls wrote in this forum that most of them don't think that being SQ's flight attendants is their lifelong career choice.

Hardly like an old shoe. Those contracts are avidly sought after and competition for slots is pretty fierce. The customer service training is top notch and the "old shoes" have no problems finding jobs after the contract.

And as Afterburner says, no one is forcing them. If it was a hardship, they wouldn't receive so many applications.

I could point out that job satisfaction seems much higher than among the flight attendants in the US, who know they have to stick it out despite some pretty gruesome pay cuts, lay-offs and furloughs in what is their career.

The cabin crew who elect to continue working in Singapore, are highly sought after. Being a "Singapore Girl" is a very big asset to have listed on your CV and as such they are highly sought after.

People have to understand the work environment in Singapore is very different than it is in the US or other parts of the world. What works in the US might not work in Singapore and what is perceived as "fair" in the US might be unheard of in Singapore.
