Why Do CO Q8 400 Have White Running Lights?

Tue Sep 02, 2008 10:27 pm

I was watching a Continental Q8 400 on approach to Norfolk International last night. I notice that it had white running lights, instead of the traditional red. I saw this earlier today on another CO Q3 400 flight. I know that white running light are mostly found on military cargo plane or Tankers, so why do CO got them on there Q3 400?

Quoting 747400sp (Thread starter):

J-41's did also. White strobes but when on the ground the white lights would switch to one red strobe on the tail. I'm sure this was done because it would be like having a camera flast constantly blindin the crews on the aircraft behind it..lol.

Are you referring to the beacon light?

All Q400s have this, in fact, all DHC-8 variants have this, IIRC. There is one red beacon on top of the fuse on the Q400, and on top of the vertical on all other models (I am not sure about the -300, as I have not worked on one). On the -200, it is referred to as a ramp beacon, and the flightcrews will from it to the strobes when taking the active runway, or when departing the runway. Same thing on the Q400, the lights are just in different places.
