Aircraft Approach Light Into DAL ( Love)

Thu Sep 04, 2008 7:45 pm

I frequently see aircraft approaching DAL and they have the approach lights flashing on and off. I see this on all WN aircraft and some private jets. Anyone know why? as I have never seen this practice before.

The landing lights alternate for increased visibility.

Increased vis is certainly one reason - research has proven that the alternating landing lights definitely draw attention better, and as a frequent user of the airspace around DAL, I can vouch for its effectiveness.

The other, collateral, benefit is that the landing lights last a great deal longer.
...three miles from BRONS, clear for the ILS one five approach...

This is a late model option on the Boeing 737 as well as some Lear models.

Yeah, it's becoming quite common to see Cessna 185 and 206 aircraft taking off from Lake Hood (PALH) with alternating flashing landing lights. It looks funny on the older birds with landing lights in the nose cowl behind the prop!
