Ever Heard Of Corporate Pilots Getting Tipped?

Fri Sep 05, 2008 2:16 am

So my roomy and I were having a discussion about corporate pilots. He knows of this one flight department in LAS that flies for one of the major hotel chains. Mostly what they do is pickup up their high rollers and fly them down to gamble, for free of course. He thinks the pilots sometimes get tipped by these high rollers. I honestly never heard of this being done.

What say you?  eyebrow

Chauffers and cab drivers get tips all the time. Doesn't sound unreasonable......especially if money is no object.

Well, this is hardly about tipping corporate pilots in general ... it's about high-rollers tipping the 'driver' of an expensive hotel 'limo'.

In general, corporate pilots do not get tipped ... in the exception, high-rollers getting a 'free' ride do tip their pilot.

I just got tipped twice last week by the same guy. $100 each way! The last time was about 4-5 years ago though. I've gotten $100 once before when I was brand new, the guy gave the Captain a $100 bill and told him to split it with me but this Captain was the coolest guy ever so he gave it to me since I was making only per diem($1.50 per hour) at the time.

I think it is more common for charter and fractional pilots than for corporate pilots, but it happens. Those guys have to deliver a very high degree of personalized service.

When I was a lineboy,

I rated a cool $20 once for giving good advice to a bizjet passenger on the best place to stay for the night and the best restaraunt in town  Smile (oh yeah, and rolling out the red carpet, literally, which we did anyways for any "VIP" appearing aircraft  Wink ).

In Africa flying Safari tourists around we would sometimes get tipped. Usually small USD denominations but every now and then something bigger. One of our guys got a $200 USD tip from one couple each way onetime. Not bad for a twenty minute flight!!

Ever Heard Of Corporate Pilots Getting Tipped?

Yes, it occasionally happens.

With charter flights, however, it is more likely.

At one time I personally flew, on a regular basis, the eleventh wealthiest individual in the USA (at the time) who owned radio/television stations, several hotels and golf courses and who, years before, made many western movies, and was a recording artist.

He also flew B-24 bombers during WWII and, held the same type of license that I do, Airline Transport....with four large aircraft type ratings.

His was quite a large tipper.

His name?

Gene Autry.

Yes, although the OP specifically asked about "corporate pilots" (and I replied in respect to corporate pilots), many replies have been regarding charter pilots, and perhape the OP meant both?

Having flown many times with both corporate and charter, I cannot remember a single passenger (read: usually employee!), tip a pilot ... and when I've been up front I've never received any. As for charter, well it depends. High-rollers to Vegas would seem top of the list for tippers .. business folks using charter aircraft, at the bottom.

Would that be a regular basis tip?

Back on my corporate ramp days my colleague and I got tipped $60 by a really drunk high profile CEO. He recommended to blow all the $ in strip clubs LOL!

Yes indeed.
Gene also owned (and flew) a PB4Y Privateer (single tail mod to the B-24) for awhile.
Then, he sold that airplane and bought a Convair 340, which he also flew.

Gene was a true gentleman of the highest order, IMO.
A pilots pilot.

Nice to know that.
Out here a few corporate pilots I know have stories of being well taken care of by their boss during their trips.Their only regret are the uncertain timings of departure.

Quoting FLY2HMO (Thread starter):
get tipped by these high rollers

I happen to know that the Australian owner (Deceased now) of a DC-8 used to carry US$500,000 in cash on the plane to cover for unknowns and to speed things up such as fuel, catering etc at odball airports... and Engineers if we were real lucky...

This man was about 6' 10" tall and dressed in jeans and a shirt most of the time and was in the "Highrollers" part of a top US casino and was getting annoyed at an American guy who was bragging to the girls in there how rich he was.. He went over and asked him just how much he was worth and the loudmouth said I'm worth X amount of millions... The DC-8 owner took his lucky US Silver Dollar out of his pocket and said I'll toss you for it... The guy promptly got up and left...

Supposedly a true story and from what I know of the man it is most likely true... RIP KP
